When AL publishes a map with breeding data it will be full of random breeding and pockets that do not fall in line with areas surrounding those pockets. AL probably has one of the most confusing breeding seasons as any state in the country, with the exception of FL. Breeding dates for the southern half of the state are pretty consistent across the board, except along the AL/GA state line. Most breeding in south AL is late January and early February. Along the state line it's November and December. North AL is a mess. It ranges from peak breeding dates in early November to mid February. Even in areas of close proximity, separated by no major land features, deer can range more than 60 days in less than 60 miles. A map for north AL would be all over the dang place. The one Clif posted is as close as has been put together to date.
the one mr clif posted is pretty accurate for all places i have hunted in Al, except for Chambers county and i think the peak there is after the season has closed for that area.

It's amazing to me the differences in timing. Several years ago we were headed over to Atlanta for the Fall race (Halloween weekend I believe). We were going back roads to avoid a lot of the traffic. We pulled into a rural gas station to get gas and this guy pulls up at the pump next to me with a really nice 8pt on the back of his trailer. It was all swole up with black tarsals. I got to talking to the guy and he said that the buck came in to his stand chasing a doe. Said all their bucks were in rut. It blew my mind at how our gun season hadn't even started yet (and I don't think their's had, either) and their bucks were already in rut.

The one above is closer, but Russell county has some bad spots and Jefferson does too. Alabama has some messed up ruts anyways. It's a complete patchwork in north and east bama

But not entirely accurate. I guarantee my area of Lauderdale don't rut in no January. They done 4 weeks before the calendar rolls over

And I guess the imaginary line could affect it but a friend of mine hunts 1 mile from Cherokee Co in Georgia and his is over by Thanksgiving. Plenty of Intel to prove it overt many years. So, again, unless the state line changes it, it's not 100% right

^^^ really depends on what part- St.Clair has a lot of variation in densities and stocking sources. Some areas you see rut activity by Christmas.

This is accurate for my area. Notice it says "peak breeding" at the bottom of the map. To me, this means when bucks are "locked down" with does for a couple days. Move back a week to 10 days for chasing, cruising, etc.

We all know the males are ready long before the females!

The AL maps are close but even our conception maps have holes. That is why we are still working on them.

I will say this... I have shot deer on SEVERAL properties when the hunters say the rut is for sure "x"- " x" and after pulling fetuses out of several does the peak date be over a month different. Often the hunters/landowners are as surprised as we are and sometimes they are dead on.

Fetal studies are the only real evidence to show the peak of the rut, which by the way is when most doe deer are bred and not the best time to hunt. The seek and chase phase is the best time to be hunting. Lock down is a lull in activity during the peak of the rut, but as always anytime you can be in a stand is always good.

It seems that just after peak breeding is when I see the most mature deer. I guess they get a taste of that sugar and hoots have more!

I agree I think they should have some yellow in North west Lauderdale county it has alot of mid to late December rut activity. I believe Daniels fetal studies also show this. Their restocking map also shows deer from Wisconsin released there.

I agree, after peak breeding is when we see our more nature bucks. Fewer does to choose from, so they have to move more. The seek and chase phase is when we see the most deer activity, though.

Saw an article on a study a few months ago said the lock down phase is not near as long as people think. As I remember 24 hours was about the longest period with any one doe for a buck. Lot more, wham bam thank you ma'am going on. Many twin fawns have different fathers. It had to be in Quality Whitetail Mag. or North American Whitetail as those are the only two I get. Anyone else read it? BTW , I believe them to be correct. Never bought into a lot of that phase stuff myself.

This one looks pretty close to me. I hunt Monroe and Wilcox. Martin Luther King day it starts the young ones and if it's cold the rut will be the end of January into Feb.

2Dogs- the article sounds pretty accurate and multiple paternity is somewhat common if you base it strictly on research done on the subject.

I guess that most of this map is correct but 1 area that it is dead wrong about is the red strip that runs along the eastern side of the state. I bow and rifle hunted the eastern side of Russell county adjacent to Fort Benning for 12 or 13 years and I'll assure you that the red line should run right on through Russell county too.

I hunt 2 separate pieces of land exactly 6 miles apart in Blount/Marshall county. On the land in Blount Co, peak rut is last week in December to 1st week in January. On the Marshall Co land, rut is the very last week/days in January, and two years ago it was actually two weeks into February before things picked up.

I would say it is fairly accurate in several places I have hunted. But when I hunt now in Fayette/Lamar on each side of the county line it is a little off. The rut in that area is late December early January.

Last I knew about GA gun season started Oct 1and went out Dec 31. At the time I was told this, they had a statewide season like we did at that time. May be different now.
