Freakin WAAAAHHHH....I'm thankful that most officers are upstanding folks who do the right thing and would help anybody at any time...even if they weren't in their patrol car at the time. If it bothers you that much just ask him. And for any LEOs on here...thank you for putting up with bullsh!t.

3 gun is awesome supplemental police training in my view. Any trigger time is better than not.

The older I get, the less I sweat the small things. I'm sure that there is wast in all local governments. My little home town bought new vehicles for the utilities department a couple of years ago and the police department has several new Tahoes. There are lots of government grants to be had if your city planner knows how to apply for them.

I'd rather my taxpaying dollars go to LEO'S than the DOT's fleet of vehicles that sit around and rarely get used, or wellfare, or some other socialist program. As a veteran I can honestly say I wouldn't want to deal with what they deal with daily. Not only do they deal with lowlife criminals but have to deal with people who complain about everything they do. If you have a problem with them being active in the community and having a presence in the neighborhoods then don't call them when you need something. Call that crackhead who "isn't" abusing your tax money.

I know a few city of Mobile cops, and they explained it to me once. You can choose to drive your patrol car as your daily driver, but it costs you. They dock some off your pay, basically the equivalent to a car payment and gas money, but a little less so that it's a perk of the job. They don't get the car for free to drive for free. They get less pay if they choose it to be their DD.

True, but those grants come with catches many agencies are not willing to abide by in order to qualify.

BTW, everyone seems to think the Tahoes are expensive. When we bought ours they were just a small price more than a suitable patrol car. They are bare bones compared to the regular Tahoes and are bought on a state bid. Not the luxury ride many people think. I drove one for two years and it was my last duty issued vehicle before I hung it up. Man you won't believe how you feel every little pebble you run over in those things because of the heavy duty suspension and they sit 2" lower than stock Tahoes.

Also, those Federal grants are still tax dollars.

Only a good conservative recognizes that. No matter what level of Gov't it comes from, you are still paying for it. Failure to recognize this is part of why our country is in the mess it is. Sorry not trying to derail the interesting police car thread.

Dear GOD I hope he wasn't off the clock in his patrol car...I'm a grown ass man and this made me tear up.

I appreciate all the kind supportive words from the good folks here. I only use my patrol car strictly for work. I have to go get warrants and turn in tickets, etc during the day time because we don't have a 24 hr magistrate. I try so hard not to abuse any privilege that I'll burn my own gas if I have to run by the grocery store or anything while I'm in town and it's just down the road. It does get annoying when people holler about their taxes paying for my car and paying my salary. Believe it or not I pay taxes too. I pay my fair share I promise you that. I even have a wife that works who also pays taxes. I understand people getting frustrated about abusing the system and I completely understand and don't blame them. IMO the system doesn't get abused very much.

What really can drive me crazy is it seems like the ones that holler about paying my salary are the same ones that complain about everything else. Most cops I know are good folks and volunteer if need be. I've came in several different times on my own time to help track down fugitives, look for burglary suspects, all sorts of different things. I've done it a pile of times and didn't even write it down on the time sheet because I know the county can't afford the over time. I don't do it for praise, I don't do it hoping they will see me and pay me over time, I do it because I love my county and I take serving it very seriously. If I have to volunteer every now and then to help keep my county safe, then that's fine with me. I love my job and I don't care how many people hate me because I wear a badge. Because those few people, like some in this thread, that truly appreciate what I do make it worth every minute. So thank yall for your support. It really helps boost morale, when 9 out of 10 things you hear about LE now days is negative. Thank you!

Hoover is allowed to drive their's all the time. There is a stipulation that you have to live within a certain distance from the city limits. They like the exposure of the vehicles. As far as them not being as nice as others on the road, you need to see my buddy's that is a Hoover police. His is really nice.

I have no problem with an officer using their vehicle on the side. I think about the dangers associated with their job and can't figure out why folks would even complain. I would love to see one parked on my access road each day because I think it is a great deterrent to crime. Most folks with mischief on their mind don't hang around where they see police cars. Park on my place anytime officers.

The ones I have a problem with are the non-LEO vehicles hauling ass up and down the interstate everyday. They need governors on them.

I all for it, of course to a degree...With the job they have to do, and what they get paid, I have no issue with it...I DO wish that the ones who drive like azzholes would slow it down some, obviously when they aren't on a call...

I agree with this. If I'm involved with an issue that requires police help and they are close by, I'm pretty sure when they hear the call go out, they will help me. It just puts more visible police presence out on the road.
