Get one that she's comfortable practicing with.

We went through the process of getting my wife a CCP back during the spring. I told her I was staying out of it, unless she asked my opinion, because she never like what I thought she would. She picked out the Walther CCP. It wasn't what I would've picked, especially with the issues they had early on in it's release, but she loves it and it's been flawless so far.

It is whatever gun she feels most comfortable with. Forcing a particular gun onto someone who sounds to be largely unfamiliar with firearms is a bad plan.
Make sure she is proficient in using it and not just a magazine or two a year.

That said my good friend researched the market up and down and went with a 238 that she loves.

My wife tried several different pistols and as soon as she held a sig P238 she had to have it....

A 27 being a small .40 cal is a little much for most women. My wife won't even handle mine after shooting it once.

I got her a Ruger LCP.

Smith and Wesson airweight 642. Light, small and concealable. No safety to fool with and goes bang every time.

I had a 23 some time ago and 40S&W in the compact size was miserable. I certainly wouldn't want to try it in a subcompact.

9MM being a lower pressure, lower cost and added capacity gets the nod by most shooters.

That's what I bought my wife a few years ago. She has to qualify every year on the Elmore County Sheriff's Dept range to carry at the Courthouse and she has qualified for the last five years shooting that pistol.

Snubnoses are great guns and I used to have a 642. The issues with them are width and capacity.

Try to get her to carry it on her body as that is better. But in the person is better than none at all.

Great choice, I love mine.
My wife uses an old S&W Airweight .38

the ONLY gun for a woman is an airweight 5 shot 2" barrel 38Special, preferably a Smith&Wesson, either no hammer or with a hammer shield.

no safety..no snags...shoots EVERY time...five times

anything else and you(and her) are playing around with her safety.

There are several issues with this statement.
Women are capable of running a gun other than a snubnose with practice.

There are guns such as the Ruger LCP or Glock 42/43 or M&P Shield that do not have safeties in the traditional sense of a thumb safety.
Yes I am aware the Shield can be had with a uselessly small thumb safety as I owned one but sold it when the safetyless version was released.

a glock 26 meets all of those criteria but with 11 rounds instead of 5.

My wife carries a 380 Beretta Cheetah. It has a ambidextrous thumb safety on both side, and it comes off easy.

Its a nice gun is single stack mag and holds 8 in the mag, 1 in the chamber.

Accurate as heck and she doesnt even flinch shooting it...no kick pretty much.

It fits in her purse and she has a fanny pack type thing she wears in front of her when she jogs or walks that is a holster with an extra mag and a quik pull release.

She goes from a helpless female jogger to an armed citizen "gun up" in 2 seconds just by pulling a small strap.

Any gun she is comfortable with is what Id go with. Take her and let her handle a few then make up her mine.

My wife also used to carry a small Smith and Wesson .22 auto but she likes this better.

I guess a gun in the purse is better than no gun at all but thugs that attack women are usually after a couple of things......the purse and it's contents or sex. I'd prefer my woman to always wear her handgun.
