No need. They'll start knocking on their own.

7.3 is the Second best engine that has been mentioned in this thread compared to a 5.9 cummins..

There's only one answer, and is not mentioned, but of the two, I'd go Duramax.

I'm on my second diesel with zero out of pocket expenses other than normal oil changes.

People saying they don't want a diesel because gas is better must be the same people in the thread saying they prefer cheap binoculars because expensive ones aren't any better.

I guess I'll knock on some wood. Had a 2012 Cummins that I put 130k on and just traded in for a 2015 through all the dodge recall buy back stuff

I've heard you can get some pretty good deals on them in Missisippi with a lot of those oil field boys having to let them go since oil prices crashed.

Well your buying new. Most any of the worst in people's eyes will be zero out of pocket for 130k. Op is looking at used trucks with 100k or more.

My dad just traded in a Cummins with 600,000 miles on it. Other than transmission, he had one turbo, one head gasket, and the normal belts and alternator maintenance. Never went into the motor or injectors.

Theres a shop that only works on Ford deisels down the street. He is always over booked and has a waiting line. He loves Ford, but he drives a Dodge Cummins.

People make a living turning wrenches on every make, model and type of vehicle. That's not unique to Ford trucks, I promise.

I'm a ford guy. I've worked on them both. To be completely honest I wouldn't buy either. I drive a 07 with 6.0

We have had then all in service body trucks .. The 5.9 cummins is the most reliable small Diesel ever built for light duty trucks . The 7.3 diesel in the 2002 fords and older are good engines also . I drive a 06 dodge 2500 megacab 5.9 cummins never done a thing to the engine 350k mikes on it and I get 25 mpg if I keep it around 65 mph none of the small diesels can compete with that .. If you really baby it at 55 mph I have seen some get 28-30 mph with a fuel saver programmer . .. we have several Utilty trucks over 300k mikes have several medium duty bucket trucks with various diesel engines and the 5.9 cummins is the best one by far . In my 20 years of exsperience with them nothing has been more reliable than the 5.9 cummins .

I'm in this same situation is the reason I asked Watchemflop, but I'm undecided. I've been told to avoid any 6.0 that's not been bulletproofed, and any 6.4 period. Heard the 6.7's have been okay so far. Also heard any duramax after 04 was okay, and just about any Cummings, especially 5.9's were good to go. But I'm also smart enough to know that all of them make lemons!

Duramax. I bought one new in '03. Just rolled 204,000 miles. I got 18+ mpg with oversized tires on a recent trip.

83% of all statistics are made up.

my Chevy with a dmax has been the best truck I've ever had. It's an 05 and I've never had to put a wrench on it.
