I've done it, years ago. One evening I watched a fox squirrel trotting from tree to tree, but I couldn't get a shot with my 22. It went into a surprisingly small nest. I shot into the nest and heard the HP hit home on the 1st shot. He flopped around a little and he was dead. Still in the nest. I started shooting into the nest hoping I could knock it out. Nope.
That was probably 30 years ago. I've never so much as seen a fox squirrel while squirrel hunting since that day. Everyone else I hunt with kills them, but I don't even see any. If I was starving maybe I would do it again.
