the coyote trap that the guy set in my yard was tripped this morning. It was extremely wet there after the rain yesterday and all it caught was dirt and grass. I had poured chicken scraps around it. Put game camera in video mode and got him on camera 3 times last night. 742, 1032, 333. I reset the trap (first steel trip I've ever set so hopefully I did it ok). I think he'll be back tonight. Baited around it really good with dirt hole. Dead rat, ripped up bird, feathers, another bird, and egg yolk. Surely there's something there he'll like

As long as you have your trap firmly bedded you should be good to go! I always like to dig my beds a little deeper so my lowest spots the pan. It's weird but it works.

I heard him out front last night barking/howling but he didn't eat any of the bait. Think he smelled where I was out there yesterday?

It doesnt matter if you make a coyote set in a hazmat suit a yote will still smell a human scent. I just took a old empty seed sack an use that as my kneelin pad it's quick to lay down an folds up in no time. Have you tried a dirthole set? Make sure it's deep so he has to work for it. I put the end of my fingers where the dirthole is then right below my elbow that's where I line my pan up. It might seem like it's too far back I thought that too but I did it an the next morning I had my first yote in it. For fox I put it pretty much right up to the dirthole. I've caught coyotes like this too but I wasn't setting for them intentionally. Good luck! Maybe you'll wake up In the mornin to a real perty sight! grin wink

I've also found that our coyotes don't like the more sweet smelling bait. It still stinks but you can still smell a little bit of sweetness to it. I use Kellens red label an cavens Minnesota predator bait. Put them in the whole then a little bit of Sheeps wool with canine force on it an your good to go!

It is a dirt hole set. But I put some stuff around it too. I don't know what im doing. I got a guy that traps and hunts coyotes to come set it the first time and he put the trap offset from the hole. So when I reset it I put it in the same place. He said he's watched them a lot and they kind of circle around something from the side before walking up to it. I was just going off what he said. Do you think I should move trap directly in front of hole?

Killer if you're putting stuff out around the dirt hole you're taking the attraction away from it! The best thing you can do for a set is stay away from it unless it's thrown.

9 inches back and offset left. That's where the center of your trap pan should be from your attractor. Doesn't matter if it's a dirt hole, flat set or step down.

Good job on the coons Matt!

I remade my sets here at the house this morning but couldn't fight off the urge after finding some good sign this afternoon so I put in 7 more. Lol! My dad is going to run them next week while I'm at work.

Good to know. It is offset to the left like you said. I had to reset it because it was tripped, but maybe I enhanced the presentation too much. Thanks for the info.

Coyotes are easy to scare off of a set. Big flashy sets will catch fox and the occasional coyote but subtle sets will catch more.

Go back and look at the sets Velvet tines posted. She has picture proof that they are working sets!

Congrats Matt! Nothing for me this morning. Had a coyote check out 2 sets and never hit the pan and a grey fox check 2 sets without hitting the pan. They'll be back.
