We started having our Christmas gift openings at my Dads on christmas eve so we could go deer hunting first thing in the morning. Well we were sure this year would be great for Dad. You see he made sure me and my brother had our hunting tools (shotguns, and rifles) but he never had a good one for himself. He did have an old military Mauser with iron sights and an old double barrel scattergun he would take out. He had mentioned that when he got his first job that he wanted a .264 winchester but money was always tight since he was providing for his family. Later on he mentioned that he had read those .300 weatherby magnums were impressive ballistically. A few years went by and I got married as well as my brother. Mom and dad had an empty nest. Christmas was approaching and we all got to thinking something we had thought of in the past. We were going to get dad his first real deer rifle. We all pitched in and bought him a weatherby rifle chambered in .300 weatherby magnum brand new of course. As christmas eve arrived none of us wanted to open anything until Dad got his special present. He probably suspected a gun by the distinctive shape of the box. After all he had given me and my brother enough over the years. When he tore the wrapping off he had the biggest smile on his face. At that moment We all understood the meaning of "its better to give than receive". Dad killed many deer with his new rifle over the years and blackened his eye a couple of times with the scope. He always had a gleam in his eye when he went hunting with his rifle. We lost dad about 5 years ago and his rifle has been put up. That is until Saturday. I was at home when I heard a BOOM. I was thinking that was louder than any of my brothers rifles. That's when my nephew, dads only grandson, called full of excitement that he had shot Pops rifle. Dad would have been proud. It was then all the memories of that christmas years ago came back into my mind. The memory of an unselfish dad finally getting what he would never have bought for himself.
Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Great story! Your dad sounds like the kind of man and dad that most should strive to be.

The funny thing is I have my pawpaws weatherby .300 weatherby magnum stainless steel with muzzle break, flueted barrel and vx111 leupold. He died 8 years ago october 10. I intend for my son to be the next person to shoot this gun period. I also have a goal of killing a deer with my pawpaws old rifle with which I saw my first deer killed with about 26 years ago. A Remington 7400 .270 topped with Leupold.

That had to be hard to write with such a blurry screen. Thx for sharing.

Great story, thanks for sharing. Sounds like your dad and mine were a lot alike - always putting others first. Great lesson for all of us to step back and learn/remember from time to time.
