how are you dispatching them subdivision yotes? if the neighbors are like some i know...they'd have a come apart about a rifle shot near the house. crazy

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Wait til everyone goes to school and work. You don't have to check them first thing in the morning. Mid morning or mid afternoon is best.

There are more ways to dispatch yotes than bullets. A good trapping partner & a jam up catch-pole help

I'm going to start this off by saying I've been a long time follower of aldeer but don't post much. A few years ago I started following the trapping thread and I got really interested in it. I spend a lot of time managing the properties I hunt and I'm always out there trying to improve the habitat in some way or another, however I had never done any trapping and it seems like the more deer and turkey I have, the more predators I see. Well a couple years ago I gave North40 a call and he invited me down to run his trap line with him. That morning he caught a black coyote and a beaver and I can't thank him enough for letting me come along and share what all he's learned with me. He and his family had never met me before and treated me like they had known me all my life, just don't find that much anymore but can't say thanks enough. Now all that's been said to now say that its been a couple years since I ran the line with N40 but after continually seeing predator sign I finally decided to get a dozen leg traps and some dp's. I followed N40's trap list to a T, except that I ordered some MB 650's instead of the bridgers. I've been running the dp's for a couple weeks now and have had good success on coons a possums but was waiting for my schedule to open up a little bit so I could run some coyote traps. After dying and waxing the traps I finally got them in the ground this weekend. I got the first 7 in the ground Saturday and the other 6 in the ground Sunday. I checked the first 7 traps Sunday morning and had nothing. However, this morning I had a little more luck. As I was coming around the corner at 4 way intersection on the property I was pleased to see my first coyote!

It was a nice female and I got her on a pipe set that one of buddies uncles who is trapper told me about. I still had a few more traps to check but my morning was made at that point. I checked the next few traps to no avail and had two final traps to check which I set in the back of our bean field near our gut pit where we discard gutted dear and hogs. There are normally a few coyotes at any given time hanging around this area. As I came over the hill I couldn't have been any more pumped when I noticed a double on my last traps of the day!

I caught two males on the double and caught one on a pipe set and the other one I caught on a dirthole that I backed with a deer bone.

I would not have ever imagined having 3 coyotes on 12 traps in a day but I'll take it, the combination of a lot of luck and unpressured coyotes. I remade my sets and I'm planning on keeping them in the ground through the weekend so hopefully I'll have a few more in the next coming days!

Good catches CWeeks. I have not had any luck with the yotes this year.

You're right, 40 is a good guy (for a Chatomite grin ) and does not mind helping another trapper out.

CW,

Great catch. Can you explain what a "pipe set" is? I can clearly see the pipe in the photograph but I assume there are more details.

Thanks...
Rick

Google pipe dream set for coyotes. There are several variations of it but it's basically a dirt hole that you drive a pipe in the ground instead of digging a hole.

Thanks Guys, Steiner, like Hank said I'm just using 1 inch conduit on some sets instead of digging a dirt hole. In theory it is supposed to hold up a lot better in rain and coyotes can't get to the bait which makes them work harder around the set to get to the bait. I think it works well but coyotes that have been trapped may end up shying from the pipe.

Congrats Rusty! I'm going to set my first couple beaver traps of the year tomorrow. I was really hoping for some cold weather to put the snakes up for winter but I'm tired of waiting.

I good stomp to the chest is the fastest way I have found to kill coyotes. its a lot quicker for me than shooting them.

Finally produced some this morning. 1 large male yote and 2 coons.

Also set out a few sets on a new place on the edge of town, where the guy has been seeing coyote's on his game cam.

Nice grey's there 40.

It's nice to get something other than coons and possums.
I hope the new spot produces something.

That second grey looks like he was ready to get you, with that mouth open and tail up.
