IMHO not sure if would want an 8yo to have an auto loader. I agree with DK, and would go with a youth 870 compact 20ga. That way he has a follow up shot but has to shuck it to take the second shot. also it most likely would be a lighter gun than the auto loader

He's only allowed to put one shell in at a time.

x3 (or x4) on the 1187. My son started shooting an 1187 Compact 20 when he was 9 and weighed 52#. He has killed several turkeys with it. Like the others, I bought a gas autoloader for the recoil reduction. I shoot an 870 Compact Jr. and the recoil difference is noticeable to me at the range.
I would buy a Beretta 20 over an M2 (gas vs. inertia) if you want to buy a higher-end gun.

We had a pump and the recoil was to much for him. Had narrowed it down between the franchi and the benilli. Just wasn't sure if the m2 was work the extra $400 I am sure the Benelli is worth the extra money, but I would see if you could find one to shoot before you buy. You may not save much in the recoil department with either the Benelli or the Franchi, because I believe they are both inertia-driven guns.

Benelli and Franchi are not going to lessen the recoil. They are inertia driven. You need to find a gas operated semi auto. The gas operation is what softens the recoil. My Benelli M1 Super 90 12 ga has less FELT recoil than my 870 12 ga by a wide margin.....
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
