Or you could drop one of them immediately and have a 5 year old step out and try to breed her on the ground. Best bait ever.

MorningAir - true, but I thought the other day he posted a picture that had a dead doe in the field and a pretty good buck and another doe or two standing in the field? It wasn't a great picture so it may not have been a shooter buck for them, but it looked like a pretty decent buck. I guess you got to have steps 1-3 before you need to worry about step 4 though.

Congrats on the buck and good thing you got him since Christmas light viewing season is just about over! smile

I did post a pic the other day with a dead doe laying in the field. My niece was with me and she shot it. The buck in said pic was a young deer that needs a few more years. He kept coming up to the dead doe and feeding around. But I think he knows he gets a pass.

It isn't necessary to see a good tackle...you can hear it.

Great deer! Did you kill that on a lease or privately owned land?

Nice deer. A lot of work goes into managing a piece of property to be able to kill a deer like that. Doesn't just happen on its own. Be sure to say thank you to the guys that made it possible.

x3
Growing big mature deer is not a secret--years of trigger control, habitat management, hard azz work. That's why I don't even kill bucks on friends' managed properties because I know how much goes into it.

Dano would you please let me know if you have your own land or a lease. You gave the 10 "funny" steps to kill a deer but can you possibly share the "real" steps it takes to kill a nice buck like the ones you have killed over the past couple of years, I would like to present the ideas to the men in my club. The club is just getting up and running but it's some nice land in Marengo County. Can you expand on how much it takes financially to plant and put out fertilizer, what equipment would you suggest, would you use rye grass, clover, wheat or oats or a combination? I may have more questions for you!

Waiting to hear from you.

Few forgotten steps he left off:
Step 9- marry into a family with good land
Step 10- let those who are actually members of said family do all the work and pay for everything
Step 11- sit back and watch them do the work
Step 12- show up and hunt when you want to and shoot the deer the said family members are wanting to give another year to
Step 13- wash, rinse and repeat year after year

Wish it was hunting season.....year round

If someone is doing this on land you and your family hunt it seems like a family sit down would be in order and could rememdy the situation.

Nice buck. Private property? Nothing like the satisfaction of knowing that you've put in the time, hard work, and who knows how many dollars only to see it all come together like that. That's what it's all about! If you really married into that family like somebody said, you better keep that lady (and her family) happy!

So Dano married into the family? If so then he needs to be willing to help when it comes times to bush hog, plow the fields, plant and helping keep the fields maintained. Plus getting the roads cut back at the beginning of the season. Maybe I should be asking the men that bust their butts and their wallets what I need to know. Their the ones that have some great looking bucks so it seems. It's easy to sit back and let someone else put in the sweat and time, then you run and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Not judging but in my book that's a MOOCH and I would be livid if a grown man did this to me and he would NOT be hunting on my land. I have my own land that I tend to every year but only the ones that help are the ones that can hunt it. It's only fair.
