I average between 50-60 hours/week. To the folks saying "look for another job," how do you propose these jobs be done if we all quit and find a 40 hr (or less) per week job? I'm guessing that everyone on this thread who posted that they work in excess of 40 hrs/week performs a vital function for our society. If we all refuse to work past 40 hours, what happens to the other 10-20 (or more) hours that we would be doing our jobs? Who's going to pick up our slack and perform whatever service that we would ordinarily be performing? Don't tell me that the company will just have to hire more help. That's short sighted. Some of the guys working 50, 60, 80 hours ARE the company. And I'm willing to bet that some of them are working on slim enough margins that they can't just go out and hire someone to do the same quality job that they can do for only a part time gig. Willingness to do whatever is needed to get a job done is as American as apple pie man. good post

I have always been told, and believe that you work long hours and long stretches of time in your 20's 30's and 40's so that when its time, you can afford to not have to work so much in your 50's and be able to retire with enough money to enjoy life before you are too old to enjoy it.

I'm not going to put down anyone that is willing to work long hours but I'm not going to willingly do it. x2 I work 40hr/wk every week and raise all kinds of heck if I have to work more. I do not live for my job, my job just funds my life. Sure, I miss out on extra income. But I'll trade not having the biggest house or the newest toys for extra time with my wife and girls.

This post got me curios so I figured my time for the year. I am 200 hrs over on a 40 hr week for the year. Problem is I am salary.

Unfortunately, many men fall into this way of thinking. Then they wake up one day to find the kids are grown and gone, their wife has left them, and they are so wore down that they hurt too bad to do the things they'd like to do.

Hell I'd love to work less too,just worked 20 days straight 12/hr+ per day,but with 3 kids I can't afford not to work,I want my girls to go to college and not have to rack up tons of debt to do so,i also want a little in the bank when I do retire or if something happens to my job or my wife's,I understand the wanting to spend more time with family and stuff but I don't want to live paycheck to paycheck and sometimes you gotta suck it up and make sacrifices,,I'll give up some hunting a fishing time if that's what I need to do to provide for my family

Somewhere along the line Americans lost sight of what's truly important and that's spend all the time you can with your loved ones because you never know when the good lord is going to take them away from you. Like I said kudos to those that do it but I'll be damned if I'm gonna work my life away. X2 I work to live and do not live to work. I will not repeat the mistake my father made, time is precious and unfortunately he did not realize that until he was in his 60's.

Somewhere along the line Americans lost sight of what's truly important. I think you got it backwards. They used to work every Saturday and everyday was a 12+ hour work day. Somewhere along the way we started getting a weekend and a 40 hour work week. And you have to pay OT for anything over 40 to an hourly employee.e

My current job is what you would call salary I guess and I am not required to work more than 40 hrs a week very often. In my previous jobs when I did get paid overtime I didn't like working it. I like my time off more than I like the extra money. When I am at work I will work as hard as anyone buy the extra hours you can keep.
If you're gonna be stupid you better be tough.

I have as strong a work ethic as anyone. I believe in hard work. I believe in personal responsibility (just ask my wife and kids). BUT, I would never hold a job that required me to spend some of the time you guys are spending away from my family. Children need a father. Not a provider. I'm not judging, because I don't know how ya'll balance your personal lives and work, but I've already changed jobs before because of the requirements it took to get the job done. It would be a fine for a single guy. Not ok for a guy with a family. I LOVE my work, but there comes a time to balance it with all the other responsibilities I have, and when I'm old and gray I can promise I won't turn around and say, "I wish I had worked 20 more hours every week."

My father has worked 6 days a week my entire life. Never had time to do anything with me. I've begged and begged him for years to go huntin and lets spend some time together but he just likes to work I guess. I despise overtime. I think I've worked one day of OT this whole year and that was opening weekend of turkey season. They threatened to fire me if I didn't show up. I hate the way everything has turned into the love of money. Memories mean more to me than money ever will. When I am old, I'll have all them to take with me and think back on. My thinking is, I give my job 100% for 40 hours a week, if they can't get what they need done in that time, someone aint pullin their weight.
