Y'all pray I recover this deer. I know it's just a deer. Very minor compared to important issues, but this is a buck I've hunted for 4 years. He was at least 4 the first year I detected him, and I think older than that. I've seen him four times the last two years, and possibly a 5th. This year, as far as I know, he's the only mature buck on the place and has little competition. He's been more active on cameras and the fact I've seen him three times this year made me think he's killable. Only problem is access to get where I see him. He only gives me brief glimpses and it's usually not of vitals. I'm very confident as a shooter, and this morning he gave me a facing away shot at 200 yards. He was about to crest the hill and be gone. Not the most ideal shot, but I had to make a decision, quickly, and I'm standing behind it. He was on a steep ridge, so I settled my crosshairs just above the base of his tail, and sent it down range hoping to spine him or drive it into the vitals. He stumbled around for several thought, and as I was getting back on him for round two he darted right. I led him a little, sent another down range and he went over the hill. It's nasty. Almost indescribable. I got brown hair where he was standing, and bright red blood about 30 yards from where he was standing. I'm praying he's just over the hill, but I backed out because I'd rather not push him. Hopefully he will be right there.
Send one up!!

It's nasty. Almost indescribable. Take some leather gloves with you if you have them.

If he's laying where I think he is I'll need Hogwild and half the other members to drag him out.

No. We are going in about 1:30. I'm just a nervous wreck right now.

Reads like he's over the hill, dead. But, better to be careful, and over cautious.
Those mature deer can make us question our shots and scratch our heads. Being the brutes they are, they travel a long way off, though dead. They just don't know they are dead.
Prayers lifted up for an easy recovery, and good shots made.
God Bless, David B.
