2 day winning total: 14 lbs..... Wheeler is a good lake at times, but it sure wasn't this past weekend. We fished every where and everything. I don't know what first place did, but 2nd and 4th were on the flats with buzzbaits. 3rd was at Brown's Ferry with a jigging spoon..... :rolleyes:  There are alligators on Wheeler. We saw one way up river. It looked to be about 3-4ft long.

Cripes. My dad wins tournaments with 15 pounds in four hours.
I've never heard of anyone throwing a jigging spoon this time of year. Topwaters on the flats are "supposed" to be the big deal.
There are gators on Wheeler upriver, toward Mooresville and on the refuge. If you saw a 3-4 footer then it's probably 3 or 4 years old. Mama is about 10 feet long.

Two of the top five guys threw buzzbaits on the flats both days. They said they caught 20+ fish each per day. They just couldn't get any big ones.
It was blue bird both days. The water dropped 6 inches from Saturday to Sunday. ????? We'll try it again at the end of the month. The Federation Nation State Championship is on Wheeler.....

Topwater action can be great this month. Getting those big ones, as you noted, is the challenge.
