either one with heavy deep penetrating bullets like Nosler Partitions. I personally prefer a 300 with 180 Partitions.
Elk are big, really big, animals that tend to show little to no reaction to a hit. Keep shooting till he drops or gets out of sight.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

It isn't going to matter either way. You will have less recoil with the 7mm and they both will kill them dead.
Only accurate rifles are interesting.

No such thing as to much gun, just to little gun,I like,3006,308,338 mag,300 wm,tracked one last nite guy shot big bodied buck with 40 gr,,20 cal rifle, buck didn't act like he was even hit, tracked him 2.25 miles he never layed down,I'm guessing he was chasing the girls,he might die in a week or so or survive,if he had been hit with something more substantial, we might have got him, Is that caliber legal?

Mike, morons-in-charge changed min to ANY centerfire rifle several years ago, so we have folks trying to see how smalll a gun they can stunt kill a deer with.

Ive seen LOTS of them die and basically any "deer" rifle .270 and above with good bullets and good shot placement work fine.
If you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle, get a .300 mag of some sort.
