I have a lot of problems with sentence structure etc. I guess when you get out of school and work with your hands all your life it gets rusty if not maintained. I would get just as frustrated watching a man totally lost on a piece of equipment or working on a vehicle.

Bigbamaboy, I know your pain as I too struggle with spelling. Over the years I've tried numerous things to improve my spelling with little gained. It still remains one of the things I'm truly embarrassed by and ashamed of.

So, when I enrolled in the University of South Alabama in 2013 I volunteered for a learning disability study hoping they could help me fix it. Yet, after weeks of testing, all they could tell me was that while they recognized I have a problem with spelling, it was not severe enough to qualify for accommodations. However, one of the benefits of the study was a clinically conducted IQ test in which I scored a little above normal. By the way, I had about a handful of professors at South who admitted they have problems with spelling also. One was a retired Lt. Colonel who had served at the Pentagon! Just goes to show that while we are limited, might even have a disability, people that cannot spell are not dumb or unintelligent.

I can spell and apply grammar but often I'm too lazy to 1) proof read and 2) correct mistakes. The IOS auto correct has led to more of my errors than anything.

I don't think you guys saying you can't spell is something to be embarrassed about. Their are misspelled words and then they're is just bad grammar. A misspelled word is ok. Your just going to run into that when reading things other people right. I bet some of you guys are having a seizure after reading this.

Seriously, after living with it and dealing with being a poor speller all my life I am embarrassed by it. I have an expensive college education and a professional background but can't spell. I guess part of it comes from being a slight type A personality and a recovering perfectionist. The three combined can make life miserable.

Ok what three would that be? Having an education, a professional background, a type A personality or a recovering perfectionist?

Well, you guys were smart enough to realize you have a problem spelling. So, you're not dumb. Nothing to be worried about in my opinion. There are lots of things I struggle with that others can do.

Come on now. 4 out of 3 people struggle with math too.

My grandmother and mother were both school teachers. I was corrected a lot. I speak fluent redneck most of the time. Sometimes I spell in fluent redneck. It is just when what has been written does not communicate what you are saying easily that bugs me. If I have to decipher it or think too hard about it I just go on to something else...or make a smarta$$ remark about it.

The three I am referring to are:
a) my difficultly with spelling
b) being a slight type A personality
c) being a recovering perfectionist

The last two want to make things just right, lined up all nice and neat in a row, but the first has a way of gumming up the works.

I spell bad as the chick fill a cows and mid pronounced words often.
