From someone who never went to college, holy smokes what are you going to school for??? Are you being funny, or really spending that much for college? What career will you do that will profit on that investment?

I believe he's in vet school? I know a guy that is in dental school and has a wife and child, and will come out owing around $700k

He may be a dentist, but he doesn't sound like a very smart financial guy. I don't think a single person could incur that much debt if they tried. The max is usually $50K/year or so.

Absolutely not. He likes the finer things in life, and gives them to himself and his family even though they have no income.

Oh I gotcha. Yea LSU (well all state funded schools) are in a mess because of what you just talked about. They have this thing called TOPS down here, it pays full tuition to instate kids that go to instate schools. Get this, the only eligibility requirements you have to meet to attain tops is residency requirements, a 20 on the act, and a 2.5 Highschool gpa. That's insanity that's the most unsustainable eligibility requirements I ever heard. That means that average and below average kids straight out Highschool get a full ride. They want to increase taxes to pay for it. (That is why the governor was using scare tactics, by talking about doing away with LSU footbAll) I would have been ecstatic if all I had to do was graduate with a 2.5 and got a 20 on my act and get free college in Alabama. Really makes me angry cause most of these kids take one semester fail out and tax payers are stuck with the bill.

For all practical purposes, there's not a single person that belongs in college that can't get a 20 or a 2.5.

I agree with the 2.5gpa thing but just because someone doesn't get higher than a 20 on an ACT doesn't necessarily make them dumb. they may not test well.

Nah, not dumb, but definitely would have an uphill battle in college. And definitely not deserving of a "merit" scholarship!

Yep I read about that last week. I had to work pretty hard in undergrad to stay on scholarship because I knew if I screwed up I was going home. No telling the amount of kids that go to Auburn or Alabama for a semester and buckshot and go home. Had several friends that did it.

ODO problem is to many people nowadays want the "college experience" and spend there days partying it up. If someone is determined like most of us on this board, it can be done.

I have about 5k left and ready to get that debt paid.

As far as the ACT is concerned. I made a 27, didn't earn any scholarships with that score, and struggled in my Engineering classes at AU. It is definitely not for everybody - especially some of the classes I had. My motto was "D" stands for Diploma - cause at one point that's all I needed to stay above the minimum GPA, barely.

Isn't college all tests? I believe that people don't test well to a degree, a very small degree, but someone that gets an 18 on the ACT can't say, "oh I'm as smart as someone that got a 32 but I don't test well."

Oh I couldn't agree more. Everyone wants to join a fraternity, skip class, and chase women and drink specials. I did all four, but I knew when to take care of business.

Yea I'm not saying all hose kids that make an 2.5 gpa or 20 on an act are dumb. I'm just saying they don't deserve there school tuition paid for by me and other tax payers, especially when the state is in a budget deficit approaching 2 billion.

I agree with the whole 18 vs 32 gpa thing but I have to say again I knew some smart people, that made straight As, that did poorly on the ACT.

Amen! Engineering is the hardest major in college by 10x, in my opinion. Can't sleepwalk through that!

Well if any of y'all have kids that are looking on how to pay for college move to Louisiana 12 months before they start college and they got a free ride.

Another note - College admissions is one of the most unfair things in this country. But nobody's having a rally or protest over it. Like I stated - I made a good ACT score and my parents made juuuuust enough money that I didn't qualify for any gubberment money.

I had student loan debt that 1000's of others would have been able to pay by grants and scholarships no matter what GPA they maintained. I'm sure you can figure out why.

I actually graduated with a pretty negative view of how the whole system works. I didn't enjoy a lot about the whole process. It is definitely not for everybody.

It cost so much because so many people are going on the governments dime which sends demand through the the roof.

Congratulations on the vet degree. I would loved to have been able to do that.
