Ive got a 1947 16gauge A5. Thing is about 90% and receiver is covered in engravings. Original butt Plate and blueing. The wood has old dark walnut. Beautiful gun. Whats neat about the gun is i called Browning and got the year of the gun and the person told me that back then, depending on the engraver, alot of the receivers have different engravings. The only draw back is that it says 16gauge, browning did not start calling it a sweet 16 until 1948. Still take it squirrel hunting time to time.

1969 Standard 12 is my go to A5. It has a 26" Cylinder bore barrel on it, rough on some birds.

Sounds like you may have a standard 16, Sweets are light like a light 20 or 12 , they just called them sweet instead of light. Standards are kinda rare, but don't fetch the $ a sweet does.

I have a sweet 16, I bought it at sears in 1960, paid monthly payments on it, best gun I ever owned.

I have a 3" A5 with a 30" full choke barrel. I killed a lot of turkeys with it, it hasn't been out of the gun safe in several years.

Childhood friend of mines Dad bought 3 Belgium A5s when he left Navy in the early 60s...Each had 2 barrels...A light 12, a Sweet 16, and a 20 gauge...said he paid $97 for all 3, brand new...

My granddad left me his Belgium A5 12 gauge. I need to take a picture of the owner's manual. He bought it for $199 from Mayo Gun and Supply in Cullman in September of 1970. Still works flawlessly.

And to think these guns where designed in the late 1800's!! Talented guy that Browning was. The craftsman ship was TOUGH!! I felt a little too complicated for the average person at the time (or maybe not since more people where mechanically inclined) and as others have said, kicked like a mule to me. But considering everything, this gun 100+ years ago is unbelievable. Reminds me of the design and craftsmanship of the Covington planter which IMO is the toughest, simplest (any fool like myself can work on it) piece of equipment used commonly today.

I had one stolen in 1973 from my grandmothers house in Semmes.

What is that, probably $1200-1500 in today's dollars? Maybe even more.

I have several that will go to the grandkids when I leave this place. I gave one 3" magnum away to my SIL about two years ago. Gave another one to my son a few years back that is a turkey killing machine. That guns shoots #6 Winchester turkey loads better than any gun I have ever patterned. I also have a light 20 my Daddy bought me from Western Auto back in 1968. I killed my first deer with it at Wendels Lodge in Aliceville in 1976.

If you own one you can tell it is a Browning by the way the bolt closes. They have a distinctive sound that no other gun makes. All I hunt with is Browning firearms. They have been very good to me and have never let me down.

I can't stand a thief.

I shoot a Light 20. Have killed everything with that gun. Killed a lot of pheasants, grouse and Huns with it last fall.

One of two turkeys I have killed with 16 gauge was with a beautiful blonde stock Belgium Sweet 16. Noticed that the humpback design has been re introduced. It's my go to dove gun, seems easier to get your cheek down on the stock , just a good fit for me I guess.

I have got 4 Belgium 12's and one Jap made 12. I grew up shooting my dads that he bought back in the 40's they are the best shotguns I have ever had and still use all of them even have 2 Remington Model 11's on the Browning patent. Great guns, John Browning was a genius.

I have a Remington Model 11 which for all intensive purposes is a carbon copy of an A5.
So far I've only ever used the gun for trap shooting.
