IS everyone talking about shorting the deer season, or Just the does season.last I head it was extending, deer season into February 10,statewide and limiting does season.

I would hope most people would have enough common sense to know if the deer herd on their hunting property can stand a doe harvest. In our club we took of our biggest tracts this and had no does allowed on it, just based on common sense observations. On my land we havn't shot a doe in 3 years, next year if we have a good fawn crop we will probably shoot 3 or 4 of them.

Don't think license are down because they can't kill a good buck it's because they don't have a place to hunt, they can't afford $1,500 to join a club or pay $10-$12 an acre. Some have no choice but to hunt wma to kill a deer. If you take away their right to kill a doe or 2 there will be that many more that don't buy a license.

The VAST majority of people just want to kill as many deer as possible in that particular season, and to hell with the consequences. I truly believe 75% of people would kill the last remaining deer on earth, just to make sure they did not feel deprived in that last season. People are generally incapable of self control

Don't think 75% is quite right maybe 50% if 75% killed every deer I believe it would probably be like it was in the depression years where seeing a deer would be like seeing a ufo. There is still a lot of people that enjoy just going hunting and seeing deer.

Like I said people have become deer killers not deer hunters I think they should close doe hunting for a few years or limit one doe a year.

I have been in several good clubs that cost $500 or less. You dont have to pay 1500. Killing a few doe on a wma isnt a right. Why does a person need a doe or 2 off of public land?

Not sure closing doe season in some areas is going to get us where we need to be. But no doe on some of the public land is needed.

I took my kids to Pulaski Tn back about a month ago and they were amazed at the deer we saw on the way. My son, he's 13, commented "No wonder everyone comes to Tennessee to hunt. They have lots of deer".
I asked each of my kids today how many deer they have seen while riding around in Bankhead. All three of them said "none". We do a good bit of riding around too. I think its ridiculous that we don't have a good enough population that we see a deer every once in a while.
It is hard to keep a young person interested in deer hunting if they never see any deer when they go. I think this is another reason that license sales are down.

I'll agree with you on that. Hunting shouldn't be easy-peasy. But it also should be enjoyable and you should be able to get your kids involved with them seeing animals. When they go, and go, and go, and go, and don't see any or many, they likely won't return. And most kids don't give a rip about "QDM" and "mature bucks" and antler porn unless they hear it from their mentors.

I can remember when there was deer in Bankhead. When there was a hunt it would be 50 to 75 good bucks killed then they opened up doe season and now it's maybe 5 to 10 killed.Bankhead should be the number one place in Alabama to hunt. But don't go there now hoping to see a deer.Like I said in another post it will take 10 years or longer to restock and raise a heard there.

I think they need to look at making it legal to hunt coyotes and other predators at night. I see a lot more coyotes than deer while hunting. Seen 5 at one time while hunting in Bankhead area. When the sun goes down that's all you hear in the woods.

Matt runs Bankhead, or did, and has numbers. It isn't about how long you've been hunting or his age.
Being able to hunt predators at night with lights would be damned fine.

Montgot and Clem, the highest harvest rates on Black Warrior came in the early to mid 2000s. Harvest reached just over 200 deer in '06-07. It has fallen since then, and this year's data has been quite disturbing. The trend had fallen each year I was there, and I took the opportunity to decrease antlerless opportunity my FIRST season there. I got to looking at historical data leading up to the time I began employment, and I immediately saw a problem. I justified it to Montgomery and we began reducing antlerless opportunity. I made it more restrictive each year I was there, until this past season when only one doe day was allowed on Zone B and 4 on Zone A. Harvest this past season was terrible. It has dropped to numbers that are equal to the early 1990s when several hundred deer were restocked from south Alabama.
