I shoot a rem 870 special field 20ga with a 21"barrel. 555 IC. WILL constantly do in the 310s at 40. Clean your barrel and try one of Hal's other loads. It may smoke with another load

Anybody have a recommendation of another choke that might pattern better?
You're just too open pal. Some guns are like that for whatever reason and also for whatever reason...I haven't had a gun YET that will shoot a pattern worth a chit with either a flush or extended Carlson's choke. You're gonna have to choke it down some and use a ported, quality turkey choke most likely. Borrow somebody's IC .555 and try it before you try anything else. That cheapo .565 Tru-glo (Gobble Stopper - GSX) that wmd mentioned has also proven to be real consistent in the short Remington barrels too (what we use in my son's gun).

My little stacked barrel CZ is 328 in 10 @ 40 with a Carlson .585 flush mount with 1 5/8 oz of 9s.

I would agree to just go ahead and sell it, but if you are getting in the 170's with the Fed HWT, then I don't think it is the gun. Are you positive you have all the right components, and have loaded everything correctly?

A little error in loading could cause what you're seeing.

pretty sure me and buddy loaded them together and his 870 compact put up 320/180 with tight wad choke. I'm gonna borrow it and see what mine does with that choke

I'm aware pal. You and lots of other folks too. However, as my experience shows...there are certainly exception guns that don't fit the cheapo choke mold as I have had several of them myself. Hence, his might also be one of the exceptions. My Mossberg was absolutely TERRIBLE (1 5/8 oz. load of straight 9's) with cheapo, more open chokes and yet I have only seen a couple other combos that will throw a more pretty, even, 20" death ray, with very few pellets lost outside of the 20, like that gun would do with a .555 Indian Creek. I wish I could explain why some guns don't fit the mold but I haven't been able to thus far!

I had just gotten my 870 back earlier from getting cerakoted and shot the same shells in it. Had 321 in 10 at 40 so not the shells.

If it was me, I would do as jughead said and try the Indian creek before anything else.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around some of these patterns too. Some guns have to have a .570 or even smaller to get what others do with .585 or even larger with the same load. crazy
Heck, I'm going to a .600 improved modified in my bottom barrel.

I would definitely try the IC or something tighter like the Truglo. I shoot a RSF in my son's 1187 and got similar numbers; I think it was 190/190'ish (that 380 number seems to be my upper limit for some reason). I already knew it shot a good 10 ring with the Truglo .565 but I was trying to put more of the missing pellets in the 20 (and failed). I am going to try to shoot it tomorrow with a .555 and .562 IC to see how it looks. I think the 1187s are a little more finicky than the 870s for some reason.

Is the XLS load faster than stubby XL? I find that the faster recipes need more choke. Slower loads seem to like the more open chokes. IME.
I think cheap chokes work most times, but seems like Indian Creek .562 works every time.

I think they are about the same speed.

Matthew, I'm thinking of something here.

What's the barrel length of that gun of yours?

That ties in with my idea.

If you haven't heard from me by Monday afternoon, send me a PM and check on my hypothesis that I'm trying to test....

Got 260 with my 1187 compact with a jelly head. Went through 1/2 dozen chokes before reaching that (didn't try IC). My M2 did well with both an undertaker and IC but it likes to shoot 6 inches high:(
