My grandfather was one of the founders of Hi Records in Memphis (Al Green probably being one of their most notable singers). He also wrote a song that The Beatles later recorded. It was not one of their "hits" but cool nonetheless.
going further back, our family has been traced back to William the Conqueror (The Norman Conquest of England), although, when you're going back 1000 years, I'm sure a LOT of people could be traced to him, so probably not all that uncommon.
