One of the easiest ways to find your recent ancestors for the uninitiated like me is "Find a Grave" for your county. It has pictures of the headstones and relatives listed with links to their graves. It also has a search option to show all graveyards with your surname.
I know a guy who does this for past time. He's one of the people who documents the grave yards and post pictures of the head stones.
