Opoethle Yoholo was my 6th great grandfather on my mother's father's side. He was a Creek Indian, but had a Scottish father. He fought at the battle of Horseshoe Bend when he was about 15 years old and survived. he later became Speaker for the Creek Nation and then Chief of the upper Creeks. When William McIntosh the Chief of the lower Creeks made a deal with the Georgia government to turn over a bunch of Creek lands east of the Chattahoochee my Grandfather had him killed in his front yard in front of his wives. My Grandfather warned him that he was going to do it if he signed the treaty and he did.

Abel Kendrick another 6th great grandfather fought against the British during the Revolutionary war and fought against the Seminoles too. He was a private and served under Col. William Wofford.

His grandson and my mother's 3rd great grandfather was a guy named Samuel F. Kendrick and he served in the 15th Alabama Infantry in the Civil War. He was captured at the battle of Vicksburg and released after signing a document and swearing never to take up arms against the U.S. Government. He went back to Kendrick Springs, Al [Also known as K Springs] and eventually joined back up with the 15th and was captured again at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain. After which he was shipped off to Rock Island, Il. to a prison camp. He survived that as well and eventually returned to K Springs and lived out his life near Chelsea, AL. drawing his meager Civil War pension from the State of Alabama.

My great great great grandfather on my dad's side, Richard Lodge Downing came over on the boat from County Carlow, Ireland.

So I'm part Scottish, Irish, Creek and about 90% Jackass... grin

There were many generations of my family that were from Paris, Tennessee and had a long military history.

My family is Scottish-Irish and the surname was O'Gullion until they dropped the O as it became a trend to avoid being persecuted for being an immigrant. My 5th Great Grandaddy, Hugh Gullion, was killed by Indians that were loyal to the British at the Battle of Point Pleasant, Virginia. His son-in-law was convicted of treason for aiding the Torries and sentenced to hang at Williamsburg. The sheriff had to borrow a farmers horse to take him to Williamsburg and he escaped on the horse on the way. He was eventually caught and hanged for stealing the horse.

My GGgrandaddy, Anderson Gullion, 3rd Dragoons, Mexican War

And my ggUncle Sgt. William Franklin Gullion, Company D, 48th Alabama Infantry, CSA.

haleyville al,
My wife is tied in with aunt Jenny johnson. If you grew up any where near bank head forest you've heard the tales. She is also related to Carmel Taylor. He wrote several songs for George Jones.

My grandad always said general stonewall Jackson was part of family somehow. Never researched it to confirm.

Probably the most famous person i have uncovered so far is Rex Griffin. He was my dads great uncle. Uncle Rex as my family refers to him, was a country music singer and song writer in the 30's. He was inducted into the country music song writers hall of fame. The Beatles covered one of his songs along with some other famous artist, Unfortunatly Uncle Rex was a drunkard who often sold his songs for enough to get a bottle or 2. Family lore has it that he sold some songs to Hank Williams for booze money.

Rex Griffin

Other than Rex there were a few confederate soilders and some moonshiners.

I have a distant relative that married one of Daniel Boone's sisters. Simp McGee of Decatur was a great great uncle.

Interesting character... There are a lot of obscure singer songwriters that have never gotten the recognition they deserved and a lot who were also troubled souls...

I thought I was related to James Madison until recently. Son had to do a paper on him so I thought it would be cool to add that tidbit of info. Well I dug out some genology stuff a great uncle did and found out otherwise. Way back on moms side there was a guy who married twice and had 13 kids between the two women. He must have liked presidents names because he named one son James Madison Monroe and another one Thomas Jefferson Monroe. And to make it more confusing, one of the sons he had by the second wife he also named James Madison Monroe. So they were half brothers with the same exact name.
