My son is really interested in Turkey hunting. He is going with me every morning. He is only 5, but a pretty stout and tough 5yo. His gun safety is better than most I would say, but of course not this would be a gun that he would literally be sitting in my lap on a rest with me whispering in his ear every step to take (knock off safety, aim, pull the trigger, etc...) Mossberg makes a super mini bantam that has a 10.5" LOP, with a spacer that can go up to 11.5". It's available in 20 ga. and .410, the 20 ga. uses chokes and the .410 is a modified bore barrel.
Federal makes some 20 ga. turkey loads 2-3/4" shells and claim 47% less recoil. Or should I stick with the .410 which I am sure will have nearly zero felt recoil?
If I go with the .410 what are my options for a turkey load, how affective will be?

Don't let that stop you from loading pal. If you can follow directions you can load. All you need besides shell components is a digital scale ($30) and a roll crimper ($25). I have a drill press but some load with a handheld drill I think. It's super easy!

I already have everything for reloading because I reload for rifles. Shotguns are totally new as I have never done anything with a shotgun because I've never had anywhere to go. Loading a rifle cartridge is easy I'm not sure about all the steps to a shotshell. I do wanna load some up one day though just need a little more understanding. Guess I just need to find a YouTube video on it.

I have loaded rifle shells for years, just started loading TSS this spring. Loading shot shells is MUCH easier than loading for a rifle.
Start with a new shell (comes with primer installed) Weigh powder and dump it into shell Insert nitro card and push it down onto top of powder Push wad (shot cup) onto top of nitro card Put thin plastic film (mylar) inside wad Insert felt in bottom of wad Weigh shot and dump it in wad Weigh buffer and put it on top of shot, stir or vibrate this throughout shot Place overshot card on top of shot Roll crimp Shoot

Lonster Loading for the .410 recipe is even easier than this....less components in the .410

Thanks for the tips. I will try and search through here what components i need. From what I have read on here the shot is hard to come by so may be next year before I have everything to load. Turkey hunting with the 410 has always interested me greatly and I would be more than excited to kill one with a 410

Single shot .410, go find one at a pawn shop. Take a saw to the stock, load some tss. This is me at your sons age with the above setup, except it was lead back then. Epic picture

My son is 7 and he's shooting a h&r snake charmer .410 with a full choke barrel. It patterns great at 30 yards. I got him some hevi shot 3" number 7's ( it's a pheasant load they make). Hasn't had a chance yet as our birds seem to be suffering from lock jaw or they got the memo that I'm coming and hell is coming with me lol. He will have a franchi affinity compact 20 gauge next year and I imagine I'll jump on the tss then as well
