Because if we didn't have a need for that stuff in a situation then we would never had to discover it. If you don't need a rocket then you aren't trying to develop a rocket. We didn't have a pressing need for that stuff so there wasn't a push to develop it.

WTF you think we were doing up there to begin with? We were searching for things that can make us wealthy, healthy, and powerful.
If they landed and found a pure gold core how do you think things would be now?
They did find Helium(3) which can power a Nuclear Fusion reactor and provide power for 8 billion lives. Of course that is obviously money wasted to you. Idiot.

I love the rockets, and orbiting earth, and exploration,.. I'm just asking what beneficial were we looking to find on the moon? Or is the answer nothing, we were just trying to strut while beating the Russians.

The same as Mars. Let the Chinese waste money on Mars. If it's full of diamonds covered with crude oil and they find a way to extract them, I will apologize

You are really worked up.

It doesn't seem like a personality trait beneficial of someone running a message board based on open discussion

There was plenty of stuff we were exploring to see if was beneficial or not.
Possible Colonization of the Moon
Scientific Knowledge
Maybe the moon had diamonds.
Educational benefits of that project were enormous. Can you imagine how many children buckled down and became fascinated with science because of that and thereby expanding more innovation in America?
There were plenty of unanswered questions about space and the moon at the time.

Moon travel was a stepping stone to Mars travel. Mars travel may be a stepping stone to interstellar travel.
You never know. Standing around with your thumb up your ass and telling your neighbor to go check it out is a good way to wind up being a slave to your neighbor.

Okay, I'll grant you that. We had to see about the moon. But can't we all agree that 1) Mars will be the same, and 2) even if it is full of diamonds or is colonizeable , it's too far away to be financially doable?

Again, it seems like penis measuring contest 2.0

That is what bothers me

Since Obama has become President NASA has gotten really weak. Private companies have taken over Space exploration and China too. We need to warm it all up and get our asses back in gear and get out there as a country. Back in 1969 we were unified for doing something that humanity had never done, and we phuckin did it!

You need an identifiable goal people can relate to, understand, and ultimately support.
The Moon and Mars provide that goal.

I can't agree that Mars will be the same. That's why you go, to find out.
Just like everything else though you gotta start somewhere. The journey of a 1000 light years begins with a single step.

I agree. If we don't go to Mars, than we don't travel to the end of our solar system, other galaxies etc etc...

Most times, you can solve a problem or issue as it jumps up and bites you in the ass. Space, however, you gotta be ahead of the game and think of every possible scenario before the mission ever leaves the ground. Missions as large as going to mars, are going to spur many thoughtful discussions, potential issues and great inventions to get around those issues. I hope I'm alive when it all happens.

If one looks at the space program they can assume it's a waste of $$ real quick. But once you dissect the minds and quality of thinkers involved it makes sense that good things come from it.

What is the moon of Saturn, Titan. Wasn't until around 2004 when we sent a Saturn fly by to investigate the atmosphere. It wasn't until then that we discovered that the majority of the atmosphere was made from hydrocarbon, as in methane. There are several other ways methane came be made. If like most Methane made we find here on Earth. If it is made, like we find it here, it was made from organic material.

I'm sure there's a good reason why, but why aren't we going there instead of Mars?
