My daughter has a 2011 Ford Expedition with the 5.4 engine. She came in from Dallas on Thursday. While on the way the the car became sluggish and now a lifter is tapping. Had a mechanic check the fuel and the fuel pressure and it checked out ok. Checked the catalytic converter and it checked out ok. The car has 98000 miles on so I changed the plugs and the air filter. Put in fresh gas and some sea foam. Still doing the same thing. The car seems to bog down more so when going in to second gear. Any guesses as to what may be going on?

One of the Coil packs gone bad?

Don't know. I would think there would be a miss fire.

Could be pretty much anything. I assume the check engine light isn't on - or you could pull the code.

My guesses in order:
1. O2 sensor
2. Injector
3. Vacuum line

Correct. The check engine light is not on.

My first thought is build up on the intake, have to take my wife's expedition apart first chance I get for the same thing. Cam phasers don't always set the check engine light in the beginning

I still get codes a lot without light being on with 04 to 2010 5.4's. It's worth a try. Intake runners should always trigger the light but we get codes for those a lot with poor performance and no light.

Any popping or backfiring in the intake

Sounds like coil pack. My F150 did the same thing, it threw a code without setting off the check engine light.

If it's a 5.4 the most common problem around the mileage you stated is timing cassettes.I think they are made of nylon and they can cause plenty of problems without setting off codes.I knew of one that became sluggish and acted like it had bad spark plugs and another that the oil pressure dropped to nothing.

Well I think it is fixed. Took it to a mechanic friend. He put his stethoscope on and said there's nothing wrong with the engine.Said the noise was from an injector. We took it out for a drive and he ran the dog shat out of it and it. It appears that the problem is solved, running fine and no tapping.

It's a ford, found the problem. Glad you got it fixed though
