we darted one in a tree in Birmingham in 1992....
several seen in Chilton Co in recent years. Troy, I was told Sunday by a guy (85 years old) said the State released some over towards Society Hill years ago. You ever heard of anything like that? I hunted over there 10 years ago and saw tracks and sign, but never a bear.

Have any of you guys walked up on these bears while you were hunting? What did the bears do when they saw you? Walk up on them all the time.......sometimes the turn and run, sometimes they stand their ground and sometimes they will come closer to check you out. It all depends.... So, what do you do when they stand their ground or when they come towards you? I really never thought we would ever have a problem with bears in Alabama. When they stand their ground I slowly back away never turning my back. If they start coming my way it is usually out of curiosity at this point I generally shout at them and wave my arms generally they either turn and run or at least stop coming my way. If it tries to circle me I generally keep my eye on it and just move the direction I need to go to get where I need to go. As you notice I have no definit answer for you because you just never know how they will react since they are wild animals. That being said the only time I have seen them be aggressive is when a cub is involved.

It is not a problem here.
New Jersey has a problem with bears. Parts of Florida have problems with bears.
Alabama doesn't have a problem with bears. We have a problem with ignorant people who don't know about them.
Lol I would say 99.9 % of Alabama doesn't have a problem but I know plenty of people that live around my club that will argue with you on that point. I do not see them as a problem even though I generally see just as many of them as deer most of the year on my lease, but I do see where they will be a problem as things go in SW Alabama. It will probably be a very long time before the rest of the State even has anything clos to the population we have though......

I've got a really cool 8mm movie of my Dad on one of the outlooks, standing on a rock, in the Smokey Mountains, feeding a Momma bear, jelly out of a jar with a plastic spoon. He was maybe 15 years old so it was around 1949.
He told me that she had cubs in the tree line and several other tourist were trying to get around behind her and take pictures, and every time she would see one of them get between her and the cubs, she would run over there and swat at them and then come back to Dad feeding her jelly.
I've been hoping to see one up at LRC one weekend.

A bear was seen in Weogufka last week, then a few days later one was seen in Tallapoosa co. Sightings were about 25 miles apart, so I've wondered if it was the same bear. Might have even been the Opelika bear.

There's been bears in Bibb Co. not far from the Chilton Co. line since I was a kid. I've seen them on the Antioch Rd. myself a couple times. It seems for whatever reason sightings have became more prevalent for whatever reason. I think it's a good thing.
