I have little faith in the state getting things right. But they might. This new program hasn't even started yet. We have not even went through one season of it yet. I'm gonna wait a season or 2 before I get too excited about what they do with the seasons and limits. I'm betting that no matter what they do, some people will not be happy. But I guess it's fun to talk and complain about it in the meantime.

Wonder how many divorces this will cause?? Shouldn't cause any that weren't already heading that way. If a man can't set his priorities up right it is not the states problem to make him spend time with his wife being the husband he is supposed to be.....

There are some things that everyone will never agree on. Apparently season length is one of them. I hunt a lot more than most folks since I'm retired and live very close to where I hunt. I've been deer hunting for close to 60 years and still enjoy it as much as I ever have. The whole process is a year round thing with me and it's pretty much what I do. I also like to fish and also do that all year. I have a pond at my house and 4 more on my leases all within 3 miles. I deer hunt almost every day during the season, see deer most every time I go, including some pretty good bucks, but rarely kill a deer. Most years I kill one or 2 does and if I see a special buck, over 130, I might shoot it or I might not. I enjoy the days I don't kill anything just as much as the days I do. I didn't get to this point overnight, but I'm glad I did

Problem is a lot of older guys in your shoes want everyone to trophy hunt just like they do, but younger guys may not be to that point yet, or even want to kill their first deer.

You're right, it is an evolution over a lot of time. I have killed a lot of deer and several of them were good bucks. 4 bucks over 130, 2 were 140+ and the biggest 148. Will be hard to top the biggest but it could happen, I'll keep trying as long as I'm able. I just enjoy being in nature and appreciate the things I see when I'm there. Most years I kill one or 2 does and if I see a special buck, over 130, I might shoot it or I might not. I enjoy the days I don't kill anything just as much as the days I do. You don't have to hunt this extra time period or you can simply show some self discipline and keep your finger off the trigger if you think too many does are being killed. You don't need the government to help you decide on either count.

You don't need the government to help you decide on either count. Why do we need the government at all then? Let's just have year round season and no limit. Nobody is forcing you to go or pull the trigger, right?

My point is just because I choose when to go and when not to shoot, doesn't mean others have that same control. I don't have thousands of acres to work with, so what my neighbors do affects me. It's a fine line between "We don't need the government to tell us what to do" and "Government being in every aspect"... Somewhere there is middle ground. And all the stuff you said in the op about kids getting excited, etc. it's hard to get my kids fired up to go watch grass grow. There has to be laws and rules or their won't be as much game left to hunt. The population has decreased significantly. My kids aren't old enough to "get in there and get after it". They sit in a box on a green. But it sucks when they see nothing, over and over.

Several Anarchist among us. I find that rather amusing but somewhat worrisome in the face of logical thinking.

Wow! Sum thoughts there!!!
We just manage our deer herd with restraint and discipline and we're rewarded and we're doing just fine. Every buck ain't going to be a 140 B&C and every 4 yr old, regardless of antlers, is a trophy.
And, we don't kill every doe we see!
Bottom line, we don't listen to the state as to what we need to shoot. We abide by the laws and like the extra days and we don't use the extra days to shoot 2 yr old basket racks.
I quit telling folks how to manage their deer herds a long time ago. But, if you want a chitty-bang-bang deer herd, manage it in a chitty-bang-bang kinda way. But greed kills. Literally.

My point is that you want the government to help you to control what your neighbor, friend, enemy or whoever does on THEIR property because you want to manage the deed herd in a certain manner. I have shot a few does in Alabama in the last 4 years but no bucks because I haven't seen but one I wanted. Just didn't have a good shot. But if my neighbors club is a "if it's Brown it's down..." type of club, who am I to tell them they can't hunt that way? Or try to influence government officials to change the laws to suit my desires? In case you haven't been paying attention, the changes to our game laws in recent years have been because of special interests doing exactly that. (i believe you have been paying attention, otherwise you would not be posting on this forum)

The other guy is always shooting, too many, the wrong sex, or too young of a deer.

(i believe you have been paying attention, otherwise you would not be posting on this forum) I understand and agree to an extent. Can you not agree that laws have to be made to protect the game animal? Do you want your neighbor shooting deer in June? Who are you to tell them what to do on their land? Does that make sense? You have to draw the line somewhere. Btw, I'm in favor of the extra days. I enjoyed the extra days last year. And would have given the whole month of December for those 10 days. However, I also realize we need regulation for our game animals.

I like the freedom that Alabama has given us before with long seasons and liberal bag limits. I've never shot more than 5 deer in a season in over 30 years of hunting so the new limits have not affecred the way I hunt. I've just learned to be more selective in what I shoot as I have aged. However, if my neighbor wants to whack em and stack em, it should be their choice. I would prefer the neighborly route and try to see if we can find common ground and see if our management objectives overlap which would benefit both of us.
Now we have special interests (aka big business) exerting influence over the state authorities deciding what, when and how many game animals we can harvest. Once they start chipping away at the foundation and reshaping the laws to fit their objectives, it will continue to erode the freedoms we have enjoyed for years. To many aspects of our daily lives are affected by special interest controlled government lapdogs and their regulations. I don't want more control over my recreational time if I can avoid it.
I am not an anarchist...just someone who wants to be able to live without having to tote a lawyer around with me to make sure I'm not breaking some new law/regulation every time I step out my front door.

I just wish they would do their freakin job and base decisions on sound biology and not money or backdoor deals. The only way to do it right is to concentrate on more conception studies and adjust the seasons for that area, and yes i know the damn map would look like someone used it to pattern a shotgun, but thats the only way to do it. Use science, not somebodys opinion. On my farm, the season should go out the end of December, basically i don't hunt it much after that. The ruts over and no need to shoot any doe's. 11 weeks is enough pressure on a piece of property. I move to my club land at that point and hunt the rut down there.
