I've got a 2015 Honda Fourtrax 420 Rancher I am wanting to put a winch on. Maybe ya'll can steer me in the right direction here ... I've heard that WARN makes the best one so I've been checking into them here. - What pulling capacity do I really need for an ATV (2000 lbs - 4000 lbs)?
- What are the advantages / disadvantages of steel cable versus synthetic rope?
- What would I need to mount mine to my ATV?
- Is it difficult to mount it or would I be better off having it done at a shop?
Thanks!
I don't want to pass quietly into the night. I want to slide in sideways kickin and screamin Life really is awesome ... Soak it up while you can ...

An under sized winch is like a 3" pecker.. good for around the house but i wouldnt work it down the road. A disadvantage to the synthetic cable is you cant snatch on it

Bigger the better... may have to pull out a UTV not just ATV's...
I like the rope... I would rather get hit with rope than cable...( like reno said down fall is you can not snatch it as hard as cable)
I would also advise to mount it on the outside of the ATV if you can.. may have to buy a bumper to attach it but it sucks to work on or re-spool on that is mounted on the inside.
I love the rut. The woods are like a bunch of roided up meatheads fighting over a girl.

as far as capacity, I've always heard a good rule of thumb is double the weight of the vehicle it's mounted on.
YMMV

A disadvantage to the synthetic cable is you cant snatch on it Not sure what this means Snatch on it..to back up with slack in cable and give it the gas to snatch them out. The rope will pop BUT the rope generally just lays flat when it breaks vs cable that tends to pop back

I'd go with a Viper winch. I bought one off Amazon pretty cheap. They're the best ATV winches on the market and the warranty is amazing

Sheesh, I've been reading articles on Wire versus Synthetic rope, now I'm confused ... They both have lots of advantages/disadvantages

I'm looking at replacing my steel cable with synthetic rope. I figure if I've got a strong enough winch, I don't need to snatch on it, and I absolutely HATE it when I grab the cable and it grabs me back!

I bought a winch for my Pioneer a few months back. The best prices I found were at superatv.com
Went with the synthetic. I like you, was buying my first one and at a minimum you want to go 1-1/2 the weight of the vehicle, but double gives you some added insurance.
