First generation sequoias were a little under built. Transmissions are known to fail and the overall build quality wasn't great. 4runners in that era whether it be 3rd or 4th gen are very reliable and built well. That's why you can probably y get a sequoia cheaper

Early 2000's I'd go with the runner, unless I just HAD to have more room or the runner couldn't handle my towing requirements. The runners in that time frame are bullet proof.

I've got a 2007 Sequoia 4x4, the last model year with the smaller body style. It is the size of the new Tacoma and has the 4.7 V8 engine that was in the 03 and 04 Tundra I had. I think that engine is very dependable. I put over 225,000 on the one I traded. The other was totaled by an illegal while sitting at a red light in Montgomery on 231 with about 200,000 on it. Other than scheduled timing belt and such, I never had any problems with those engines.
I've put new ball joints on the Sequoia, and it has about 160,000 miles on it now. I bought it for the 4WD and smaller body than the double cab Tundra I had. Good luck finding one with 4WD. I just stumbled across it and have only seen one or two with 4WD. It was owned local and had low miles (89,000) considering. I get 18 to 20 mpg depending on how I drive.

I've owned both and if I needed to use it in any off road situation I'd definitely go with the 4runner. For road travel it's hard to beat the Sequoia.

4 Runner. I'd prefer the smaller of the two for off-roading.

I would go with a 4 Runner over an early model Sequoia. The early years models had poor gas mileage and the transmission left a lot to be desired. They have since beefed up the Sequoia. My ex has a 4 Runner (2002) I think that is V8 and runs great. She still has it. Good vehicle.

V8 was an option in the 4th gen 4runmers starting in 2003.To the OP I'd prefer a 4runner for what your wanting to do. Its smaller to get in and out of tight spots gets better gas mileage.

I had an 08 Sequoia.I bought it after a drunk driver hit me and totaled my Tacoma. At that time I bought it because I thought I was going to inherit my nieces baby and needed more room. That thing had any option you could put on a vehicle at the time and was a piece of paradise on a long trip. The only big drawback and it's a big one is the gas mileage.Them things drink gas like a teenage boy after summer practice.

I checked gas mileage over the weekend. Strictly in town with the AC running it drops between 16 and 17 MPG. That's awesome. You have one of those vehicles that gets better mileage than manufacturer exaggerat... I mean estimates. It seems lots of people have those. I wish out of the 60 or so vehicles I've owned that I could have had just one that got better than the advertised mpg. P.S. Your onboard computer will lie to you. 2007 Toyota Sequoia 4WD 8 cyl, 4.7 L, Automatic 5-spd Regular Gasoline Combined MPG:15 combined city/highway MPG City MPG:13 city Highway MPG:17 highway 6.7 gals/100 miles

COMPUTER could be telling a lie too. That is what I'm going by, as I have not manually checked it. I check it during hunting season which usually means no AC.

I drove my 20O4 4 Runner for 9 years. It was a V6 4x4. I loved that SUV and it served me well hunting, but the 04' and 03' have a potential head gasket/cylinder issue that may require a new engine for a true fix. This problem usually occurs after 150,000 miles is what I was told (I don't know if the V8s have this problem). Supposedly the problem was fixed from 05 and forward and may not be in every 03/04 4Runner, but it was in mine right at 155,000 miles. Either way I bought a new 4Runner in 2014 and love it too. I prefer a smaller SUV for hunting purposes so I can get into tight spots a little easier.
