Don't think that your workplace is being generous. That is the minimum they have to offer according to the federal Family Medical Leave Act (or something like that). That isn't optional for them. Many places will pay you if you have unused sick or vacation time. My wife's employer lets the other employees donate sick days to the new mothers also so they can continue to be paid through maternity leave.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

The real crapper is when these guys will take off "paternity leave". I'm not talking a long weekend or week off either.

My work offers 2 weeks "Parental Leave" that can be taken by the mom or dad, in single day increments or all at once, and can be used out to a year from the child's birth. In addition, the mothers get 12 WEEKS PAID. Plus add in your normal vacation. Pretty incredible. I got to take off 2 weeks of paid parental leave when our son was born in March, which was awesome considering we don't have any family nearby to help us out. They also offer some kind of similar benefits for adopting a child too.

My wife's work, on the other hand, accrues Paid Time Off. You can use for vacation or sick days or whatever. But that's also what you have to use for maternity leave. Beyond that, it's just standard FMLA protection....choice of up to like 6, 8, or 12 weeks UNPAID (beyond your PTO) but your job is still protected.

I took off 4 weeks each time we had babies. It was all paid, but used my sick leave. My wife gets paid for 8 weeks and can take up to 12 weeks unpaid.

Good question, we have 3 already and with my work schedule it would be hard for her to get the rest and recovery time she needs.

I think it's good to help out. Good bonding time, and just nice to spend time with the family. If you can't take off, that's understandable. I wouldn't trade my 4 weeks off for anything.

Because they have to help change the nasty diapers. Geeze, what kind of husband are you?

BTW, I took about 3-4 days for both my kids and then was back at work. I ran from the doody as fast as I could.

All good, i never asked you what you took off personally, just what kind of deal ya have at work.. not sure what youre getting at, bashing me for taking time off from work to help take care of a newborn.. sorry if you could only take 4 days off, dont hate on me for it. This wasnt what the post was about.

My wife took off 12 weeks with both of ours. Used short term and took sick leave until it ran out and then used vacation to get paid for almost all of it both times. What she didn't get full time pay for she got whatever percentage short term is. I took 3 days with the first and 2 with the second one. More power to you if you can take off for it, I wasn't needed around the house so I went to. Where I was needed at that was at work .

You serious, Verne? I wasn't bashing anyone only responding to 257 and making light about a man's inate fear of diaper changing, at least mine anyways. For the record, I probably had a years worth of vacation and sick leave built up when my children were born that I could have taken, but between my wife and my children's grandmothers, they didn't need me so I was more useful at work.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Paternal leave is B.S. Just because the damn democrats tell you that you can have it doesn't mean you should take it. How in the hell did large families make it before birth control arrived and most women didn't work? I guess they sucked it up like hard working Americans.

Newsflash, there's a wage gap in America. We're all told about it and most of us know it's true. What most folks won't tell you is that it's partly attributable to women missing more time from the workforce due to pregnancy and related issues. Now we have damn men missing work due to a pregnancy they're not even experiencing? Lord help us all. This society will never understand how people like Sacajawea were able to give birth and raise a child while participating in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

First one, I took off a week. Third one I barely made the birth and asked the scrub nurse for a 7.5 glove, cause the OB wasn't there eith and I thought I was gonna have to birth my own child. I went back to work the next morning.
