Any of you guys ever ran across something you knew was worth money, or better yet bought something for little to nothing to find out it was worth something or a collectible?

Dad stopped by the house this weekend and was showing me some stuff he bought at the local "worlds largest yard sale" or what ever they call it around here. Anyways, he had a old looking solid aluminum crossbow, the thing was hideous looking, we joked about shooting it since it had a string and could be cocked and shot. We didn't tho. I asked him what he was going to do with it and he said probably scrap it cause he could get more than he paid for it if he couldn't find a use for it. He decided to put it on eBay, to his surprise he woke up to what was a bidding war between a dozen or so ppl. It was up to $400 buck, he bought it for $5 or so. He ended up pulling it off and researching it and some guy messaged him about it. Turns out the cross bow he bought is the third of three that is known in existence and has something to do with chewbaca and Star Wars. (Dads as star wars illererate as I am) These guys are going crazy wanting it though.

He has found several things like this that he randomly buys and has made a huge profit on. It cracks me up with some of the stuff he shows up with and then make a killing reselling.

I told him we need to load up and go out to Vegas to the next big Star Wars convention, Sell it and help fund the trip out there.

I've never watched the first minute of a Star Wars but from the research I just did, These Star War guys really want these things. It's the bow that Chewbaccas Bowcaster was designed from and these fans use this bow to build exact replicas of Chewbaccas bow. It's a neat find, No telling how many I've walked right by up at the local Taco Bet trade day, though.

Awesome, i wouldnt feel guilty about it... let the bidding continue! He might be really be suprised if the right atar wars collectors hear wind of it, and no.. ive never been that lucky to find anything of much value.

Your dad's Star Wars bow sounds cool.

About 12 years ago or so, I bought a toy boat motor from a yard sale for a dollar. The guy had a whole box of em. It ran off of a 9volt battery. Did a little digging online and found out it was made in the 50s. I put it on eBay and had a bidding war going on the first day. I ended up selling it to a guy in upstate New York for $550. I've been a yard sale nut ever since and have yet to find much of anything that I could turn that much profit on. I hold a yard sale annually at my house now. I try to sell a little bit of everything. The old ladies love my flowers I grow and the landowners all buy the oak trees I plant. Main thing is though, the wife sells a lot of her junk.

A guy had a field full of old 12 hole nesting boxes in various condition. Stopped and talked to him and he said I could get all I wanted for $5 each. I'd buy a few, put them on Craigslist for 30-35 bucks and sell them like hot cakes. Made several trips to his house for more.

What was the story on the mail truck? Was it rare for some reason?

Why not? If someone is willing to pay more than you did, it creates real value for the good(s) being sold.

There use to be a guy up the road that would buy surplus military stuff all the time. He went to a sale one day and they had a lot of 4 or 5 semi flatbeds loaded with wooden crates, no numbers or writing on the crates. He bought the lot and when they got it unloaded back at his place he opened a few of them and it turned out the entire lot was crated new diesel motors, must have been 3 or 4 hundred of them.

My dad bought a set of golf clubs from a guy for 15.00. One of his buddies is a golf nut. He was checking the clubs oUT and started flipping out over the putter. He offered dad a couple hundred for it. He turned around and sold it for around 700.00. It was some special ping or something like that

My wife pretty much makes a living on the side selling stuff from yard sales mainly books on ebay. She held a yard sale for my family. My aunt brought some stuff and one of the things was this silver looking candle holder. It didn't sell at the sale so she told my wife she could do whatever with it. My wife found numbers on it and looked it up and it was selling for 700. It was Sterling and part of a collection. Well she told my aunt and they agreed that my wife would sell it and they'd split it. My aunt took it home and we never saw it again.

She buys a lot of religious books. We're still waiting on that one that's full of hundreds!
