That has always been my issue with the "sighting it in with a clean barrel" argument. It just ain't practical from a hunting standpoint when hunts often span long weekends, consecutive weekends, etc. If they shot the same on a clean barrel versus a fouled one it would be super easy to deal with one but they don't...and that's why they suck regardless of which powder you put in em! I'm a terrible hunter so I seldom get to shoot any of my firearms except at the range, but would running a cleaning patch or two through the barrel after shooting get enough of the fouling out to bring you back to your "clean barrel" zero? -GB

-GB In my experience...pulling a bore snake through it won't even bring it back to clean barrel zero.

I like to pop a cap with a little powder to foul a clean barrel before loading to hunt. My 45 likes shots 2-4 then begins to drift just like the first shot with a clean barrel.

Hi,unless you use smokeless powder, all other substitutes and black powder will corrode the barrel, if you don't clean it after firing it, within a few days or so. The black powder leaves more of a gray powdery substance and the other substitutes leave more of the rust.( Please only use smokeless in smokeless approved gun barrels, they will blow up the barrel in a regular muzzleloader because of the pressures that build up).A friend of mine gave me a solution for a Quick cleaner that does a great job without taking the gun all a part to clean. it is 1/3 Murphy's oil soap , 1/3 hydrogen peroxide, 1/3 Iso propyl alcohol. put in an old spray bottle and spray on patches and run down bore several times, then follow up with clean patches until they come out with nothing on them ,this will keep barrels from rusting until you can do a more thorough cleaning. This will not harm your barrel.

This is same solution I use to clean with also. Works great.
