What's the best file or some tips on sharpening one? Mines about eight years old and I have never sharpened it.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I use one frequently and have always used a 12" mill bastard file.

Use a large mill bastard file and a vice and draw file it. I got well acquainted with a bush hook when I was a young man.

Ok, this is a sling blade:

And this is a bush axe:

I don't know what a brush axe might be. smile

I've always just sharpened my bush axe with a file. I've never owned a sling blade, so I don't know how to sharpen one of them. My grandfather had one he used but I was really young when he was using it and he never would let me play with it.

I hope this post has been educational. smile

I've always used a file, too, but contrary to an above comment, I get it as sharp as I can get it.

Sorry to correct you PCP, but it is actually a "bush hook"

Same way I've always heard it...bush hook. I've always thought of a bush or brush axe as an implement that looks just like a bush hook, but has a much thicker and heavier blade.

Sling blade...same as PCP.

Nope. My dad called it a bush axe, and he was never wrong about anything in his life. All you had to do was ask him. smile

Then there's the Gerber "brush thinner" which is an absolute ninja in the woods. I recommend grip tape for the handles because it will fly out of your hand when they get sweaty.

I've always called them a bush axe too, but have been corrected many times. I think they are formally known as a ditch bank blade.
I use a grinder and file.

For a really fine edge, use a dremel tool. For a reasonable edge, use a grinder.

4 " side grinder then 90 degree air die grinder with 2" disc, then finish with a second cut file if needed. That's how I do mower blades.
