I had a conversation with a co-worker today and he told me something I have never heard regarding the zeroing of a scope. He said that while zeroing their rifles this weekend a lot of the guys would shoot, adjust and then tap on the scope to have the scope make the adjustment, now that doesn't make sense to me, every time I zero a scope I just make the adjustments and shoot. Have any of you heard this before?

I always tap on the scope in two directions. Leftover from the military - sometimes the crosshairs don't want to settle in correctly until they have been wiggled around a bit.

Yep it helps some times. May be a holdover from older scopes. I just do it out of habit now so I don't know.

Tapping helps the scope to "set".

A quality scope however will move in precise repeatable increments without tapping it. Until you let 85329458761212584 US Marines straight out of high school who have never even seen a gun use them over a couple of decades. Then you tap them to make the reticle move that last little bit.

Interesting, so modern day scopes really do not need to be set as the mechanisms are better, correct.

As for windage and elevation adjustments, the adjustment is made by pushing the greased internal erector tube against a leaf spring (see illustration below where spring is in red). In the adjustment that pushes the spring, no tap is needed but when releasing tension, the tap insures the tube moves properly. The grease hardens over time and can gum things up.

I tap cuz my uncles always tap. Probably don't have to but why worry?

I do. I was taught to do that as a kid and still do it.

I never tapped until the Marines. Don't think it helps with well maintained scopes with lower round counts. But them acogs were abused and it definitely made a difference. Now I do it just to be on the safe side.
