Well I had planned on building a shop last winter and put it off. But I have officially put the wheels in motion (slab being poured in about 10 days).

What I have is an old chicken house behind my house. I had about half torn down this past summer. What is left is 40'x 160'. I am having a slab poured in one end 40'x 36'. Ideally I would build it a few feet higher at the eves, but since its already there I'm not changing it.

The first step will be to wall up the ends and the remaining side (I already walled up one side the entire length).
I am planning to close off about a 13' x 26' area. I am going to divide that into a large room 20' and a smaller closet. The room will be for my wife, and the closet will be for a second gun safe, camo clothes, hunting stuff, etc..

I'm planning to use egg room doors for my wife's room and my closet. Probably wood paneling for walls, and ceiling.

I have some solid wood cabinets from my grandmothers house that I'm going to mount in the main shop.

Below is a quick sketch of my plans, a lot of you on here have shops, what are some do's and don't I should look for along the way.

That is a hell of an idea putting your wife out in your shop. I like it.

I would suggest doubling however big you think you need. Shops get small fast. In all seriousness I'd put a drain in the floor in case you ever wanted to hose the shop down.

Put in twice as many electrical outlets and bright lights as you think you can get by with, and as mentioned a provision for plumbing in the slab and walls.

I will have a sink in my wife's room and probably one in the shop as well. I'm planning to use as many LED lights as I can. I will probably have plugs along all of the walls. Not sure how much juice I need to run to it. I have a portable welder, and right now my air compressor is 110v. So at the moment nothing more than 110v tools. I will be putting a air conditioner in my wife's room.

Should I use any cedar planks or something similar in my camo closet?

I had not thought about a drain in the floor, I will think hard about that now.

I'm not looking to run a business from it. Hoping to get an old muscle car soon, and still have room to work on the ranger, my old truck or a tractor if needed. Do you think it needs to be larger?

Put in plumbing for a toilet & shower. Much easier to do it before it is build than after.

And put all your plumbing in the same wall if possible. Save you some money

May want to put in a strong I-beam for a chain hoist on a trolley.

I would rough in that space by your closet for a toilet and shower and sink, then put a hose bib and laundry sink on the outside of that wall. That will keep it all in one wall. I would make the doors a little wider too.

I agree but have one question, does she know your plans?

No matter what else you do, it is very important to remember to put in a stripper pole. Oh wait, every dude already has one of those. A pole for dancing I mean.

I wasn't saying it isn't big enough but I wish my shop was twice what I built.

The plumbing will all be along the bottom exterior wall. That way I can have her sink in her room then just run over along the same wall just past my camo closet and put a sin k in the shop. I actually talked to her some last night and will be going with a 4' door to her room. I will leave the main door openings at 14'. I will be installing a monorail eventually, until then I have an A-frame on wheels I built a while back.

I will probably heat the shop with a wood stove.

What do you mean 7' doors, 14' total? What size garage doors due you plan on putting in?

Things I wish I had:

More outlets with at least one 220
Urinal
Higher clearance barn door (pulling that header and replacing the door is gonna be expensive)
Floor drain
Garbage disposer on sink (about to remedy that)

You really do need to explain this wife room. I go to my shop to get away from mine, so that wouldn't work.

One more thing, put plumbing in interior walls as much as possible to avoid freezing pipes.

Make sure your overhead lights are on a dedicated circuit. Loosing your lights when your saw/mill/lathe trips a breaker is not safe.

Attached are pictures of my new shop and man cave. the building is 40x60x14 with 2 12x12 rollup doors I plan on doing only one bedroom which will open up the kitchen and living room area. the ceiling over the apartment will be done in 2x10's and decked with plywood. This will give a loft area for additional storage.
