This is nothing new. They have been doing this for years. I was checked back in the 90s on 31 in Davenport. Two GW checked my truck and 4wheeler trailer and chatted about hunting for a few minutes and we were on our way. Be nice to these guys because you may need their help one day.

They set up log truck stations at the dang gate of sawmills and paper mills and check the truck from one end to the other. Often they will find something to write a ticket for, but they don't consider the logger is trying to make a living. They might tie up a truck for 3 or so hours, and the logger loses a load of wood being hauled that day. If a truck driver tries to say something he can bet that he will be checked thoroughly every time that he drives by that DOT man.

So we should be nice to law enforcement making questionable roadblocks and checks of "our papers" even in situations when it is not mandated to show them?

No. That's crap. These roadblocks are crap. You are not hunting and unless you have a deer (or ducks, or other game) in your vehicle then you are not required to show anyone jackschitt in regard to a hunting license or "harvest" record or anything other than your driver's license and insurance if you're merely driving down the road (unless you're on a WMA road).

What if you are wearing camo, eating lunch in a cafe and the GW walks up to your table and demands to see your hunting license and "harvest" record? You're in camo. Heck, you could have been hunting at some point recently. Might as well show those papers to him?

You're at the gas pump putting gas in the truck. No trailer, no nothing in your truck other than you're in a camo shirt and Muck boots over jeans. GW asks to see your license and "harvest" record. You going to show him?

Because saying that showing them at a roadblock is fine is the same as at a cafe or on the sidewalk or gas station just because you're wearing camo or driving a truck with an ATV or something.

He asked for my hunting license, I replied I didn't know I had to have one to load water. He got huffy, I told him to pound sand. He left.

Pound sand. I was hoping you would say that.....

I have to disagree with they can enforce it. If a person is smart (I KNOW, thats a stretch) the GWs would have to spend WAY too much time trying to catch one person. On the 3 buck limit a person would have to be checked 3 times (at least) in a season ad have killed a buck each day. How many people have been checked 3 times in 1 year?

I can guarantee you they keep this up and ignore the hard core poachers and night hunters phones will ring in Montgomery. Law abiding hunters, none hunters , basically everyone but the hard core poachers , road hunters and night hunters themselves want the lions share of the GWs time spent there. Would they rather bust a " Al Capone" of hunting , or some old guy that isn't carrying a slip of paper and a pencil? I know our local guys absolutely love busting the hard core, repeat offenders. We have several and several groups of them in Jackson County, business is booming.

This goes on big time in Jackson Co. on Hwy 72. They hide and watch every kind of tractor trailer combo , many that look overloaded with coil steel, rock and such go by, and then run out and pop a log truck .

The low hanging fruit...Yea, catch the easy ones that require little work. I watched 2 GWs try to catch me one year. They where just lazy and easy to figure out. The only problem, I wasn't hunting. Didn't have the heart to tell them. A few times I would go in and watch them. I had a feeder in a bottom. They would come by my house to see where my truck was. If they thought I was hunting the would go to the back side of he hill and walk up top and look through binoculars. When they came by I had time to get to the opposite hill before them and would watch them. I don' know if bear @#$$ in the woods but GWs do P in the woods slap As a matter of fact, I went to this same spot yesterday and thought I haven't been on this piece of property in about 10 years.

Sounds to me that they are too lazy to do the work required to catch the real bad guys poaching and baiting, rather sit on the highway drinking coffee.

If y'all were walking down the street and a police officer or sheriff's deputy demanded to see your driver's license, some of y'all would chit your pants about how Big Government is being overbearing and this is a horrible travesty since you weren't doing anything but walking and have no need to show any ID.

Yet some of the same will shrug and say "Oh, it's ok" and willingly do the same at a roadblock when a GW asks for a hunting license and "harvest" record when you are not hunting and are not legally bound to possess either of those UNLESS you are hunting. I suspect many are the same who would say "I don't mind if the cops search my home-garage-work. I don't have anything to hide."

I guess the "It's a minor inconvenience ..." attitude comes into play here for many.

That explains what I saw Saturday morning. Coming home from my Tennessee hunt, as soon as I entered Alabama I saw two GW trucks on the left. They were parked on a elevated parking lot that overlooked 431. A GW was standing up in the back of his truck with a pair of binoculars and glassing all those entering the state. About 300 yards down 431 there were two more GW trucks parked on the right on a access road. My guess is if the first GW saw a deer, he would radio the ones down the road. I had a muddy truck and my hunting gear in the back, but I guess that didn't warrant me getting pulled over. Which is probably a good thing. When I got home and unloaded, there was the four point rack from the deer my buddy shot Wednesday morning.
