Since there are so few of us lefties I figured I'd post this in the general forum to get more views and replies.
I'm in the market for a new rifle. I'm going to get a 308 but I don't know what gun I'm getting yet.
I would like to get a stainless one, but haven't found one offered by any manufacturer yet.
I don't want a Browning, so no need to tell me the wonderful benefits of one.
I want a tack driver.
I want a short action, so that rules out a Tikka.
I'm not a gun snob so I don't care how little a gun costs. I consider a gun to be a tool and I treat them like tools. It won't be babied, or wiped down often, the internals will be cleaned occasionally but the exterior will get beat up.
Savage is the obvious choice for accuracy. I don't know anything about the Ruger Americans. They may be great but I've never held one in my hands, so.....
So, with that in mind, what do you guys recommend?
Once this gun is in possession, I'll most likely have a couple of Rugers M77MKII's up for grabs. One for sure. Gotta thin the herd a little.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I'm not a lefty but I bought me a T/C Venture weather shield in a 308 a couple of years ago and have had no problems with it. It costed under $600.00 and I spent a little over twice of that for a Leupold scope. Fine shooting rifle and for the last twenty years the only two rifles I would hunt with were either a Browning or a Steyr in a 7mm mag.

My father shot left handed and bought a relatively inexpensive Savage .25-06 a couple of years before his death. I held on to it until it was obvious that none of my father's grandchildren were going to shoot left handed. I ended up giving it to a friend of mine who shoots left handed, as does his son. He did some minor adjustments to it and loves it. He reloads and shoots a good bit and raves about the accuracy.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

If you are set on stainless and want a true short action, I would look hard at the Ruger American. CDNN had stainless on sale for 299.00.
I've owned one and it is a shooter.
I also had a savage in stainless. It was a tack driver but I never liked it for some reason. Maybe because it was ugly to me.
Don't rule out the tikka. The action is so smooth you will forgive that it is a long action disguised as a short action. Trust me.
There are a few stainless lefty m77s out there but I haven't seen any in 308.

Brad, all you have to do is put the hammer spur on the left and boom,,, you have a left handed rifle..
Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Get over the action deal and get a Tikka, my son has a stainless .308 lefty, mighty fine rifle. I correctly chose it over all the brands that have been mentioned.

There are a couple of more expensive options. A Remington 700 is available in a lefty (if you can find one) and Montana Rifle Co. makes a backwards action also. If you are unfamiliar with them, they look like a Winchester Model 70, with slight modifications based on the original Mauser 98. Nice guns, kind of pricey, and no dealers in Alabama.
Their short action is actually slightly longer than a Remmy, and has a 3.1" magazine length. If you handload, you will have plenty of space to load the bullet to the lands. The Remmy box will not be long enough to seat the bullets to touch the lands of their ridiculously long throated chamber.

Hey I too am left handed shooter here is the solution get you a Rugar number 1 in what ever caliber you want. One shot is all you should need. I have 308 single shot. If you buy a left handed rifle who in your family will inherit it trust me I have dealt with this for years. Other solution is to buy a pump Remington. Had one and loved it. Just my thoughts have a Happy new year.

I'm am a left and currently use a Ruger MKII in .270. If I had to go with a new one I'd probably go with the American, a Tikka, or a Remington. Like they said, you would probably have to order the Remington.

I bought my 1st left handed bolt action about 15yrs ago. A savage model 10 or 110 not sure which 308 with the heavy barrel. (Regret it now, very heavy). It has been a tack driver since I took it out the box. Fixin to get my son the savage trophy in a left handed 308. Another great shooting gun and has the accutrigger. Before I got the bolt action I hunted forever with my old 7600 in 270. Now I have a 7600 in 308 and a Marlin in 308mx. I shot many right hand bolts and would use my left hand across my face to work the bolt. It wasn't perty but I made it work.

Thanks for all the replies thus far, keep them coming. My son shoots left handed so no issues there on handing the gun down.
I don't want a single shot and I don't want a Browning. No specific reasons, I just don't, and that's reason enough.
2Dogs, is the Tikka controlled feed or push feed? One of the first left handed rifles I ever bought was a mid 90's Savage. It was a long action 22-250. I HATED that rifle. The rounds just rolled around in the action while it closed. Piece of crap. Swore I'd never own another long action, short action gun. I'm sure the Tikkas are fine guns as much as they're talked about on here.

Fur I have a Tikka in 308,but mine is right handed action.I will say that the action is very smooth, and the round transitions very smooth from clip to barrel! I would not rule one out until I tried one,and you would be very welcome to come handle my rifle, and work the action to see how you would like it.
I would rather be turkey hunting
