I never whined to get the season extended in NA, but I'm glad it did get extended.
Those of you who already get to hunt the rut seem to be the ones most against the season extension. What if the state decided to close the season from mid December - mid January? It wouldn't bother me any and would actually help me I'd guess, but I'd imagine that wouldn't sit too well with those of you who's deer rut during that time.
So why should you be able to hunt the rut, but I shouldn't be?
The same applies to the doe season. We don't have enough deer to say Grace over, so cutting the season back is the correct biological thing to do in my area.
If the shoe were on the other foot how would you feel about it 2Dogs? Serious question, not trying to be a smart ass.
I'm not trying to be an ass, but there's plenty of people who are benefiting from the changes made by the state.
As far as Chuck Sikes and his comments about landowners, he should be removed from office for making a statement like that. If they can have doe zones with different dates and areas , they can have buck time zones as well. But the $ to be made in a high fence is from shooting bucks, Dr. Warbucks doesn't want to shoot does. There are high fence operations all over the state , they want a 4 month season. It didn't have anything to do with a couple of small areas hunting the rut or they would have done it years ago. Lets make a deal and $$$$$$ my friend. Chuck Sykes will piss down yer back and tell you it's rainin'. That is just plain stupid!! As I have said many times before, make the high fenced deer private property like a fenced in cow. Shoot your deer or cow anytime of year or day/night, remove the WFF from over them and let the USDA take it over. The GW's are caught in the middle. But they ain't seen nothing yet...and neither have the hunters. I see next year the GW's pushed from the top to give tickets any way possible to drive home the message of Game Check. This will include questionable tactics such as the roadblocks. The GWs will be in a difficult position.

Typical government agency can't even serve their primary function which is enforcement, so they create a bunch of red tape to make revenue generation easier to accrue. Of all the years my family has managed timberland for clients, we have never had a warden catch a trespasser. We have engaged DCNR on clients request numerous times over the years. They show up to meet and see what the problem is and then you will most likely not see them again has been our experience.
For enforcement the best thing a large landowner can do is to hire a retired outlaw to oversee their place if they want poaching to stop!
It saddens me that my son will never know the freedom of being able to stay within some basic guidelines and roam the woods and hunt till his heart is content. I was able to back when there was honor in hunting. It was an honor to do what was right and never take more than what I needed in an ethical sportsmanlike manor.
You can't over-regulate an activity that is increasingly harder to be able to do and expect good results. The current administration will be cursed in years to come as the generation coming along has enough obstacles when it comes to hunting. I don't understand the ideology of increasing regulations while at the same time license sales are decreasing. Hunting at its core is about freedom to most Alabamians. I have always been content with the quality of our game. I would take the same game, freedom, and the honor of respecting what we are blessed with over "trophy" game any day of the week and twice on Sundays ! That was an awesome post! One of the best I've read anywhere.
All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

Word I hear is the DCNR "spends" more resources ($) on monitoring high fence and breeding operations than they get in return. Resources that would be better served somewhere else. Guess who's paying for that, us? I guess that's why Chuck wants landowners, seniors and kids to start paying. Sure wouldn't want to cost his high fence pals any more $. High fence and deer breeding laws and regs must make it attractive to be in Alabama because you don't have to look far to find one. They are out of control. There is also a CAB member who is a high fence owner or part owner making regs for us all. That's BS! I agree they should be monitored for diseases and such that may effect the wild herd , beyond that screw them. Most of us don't give a hoot if Dr. Moneybags shoots one in the big pen in August or December.

Does it really matter? Even if the state or the people still own them they have no access to them. That's like saying you own land but have no way to get to it. Who owns the deer inside a high fence??

Those big pen, high fence operations are probably going to be the start of CWD in Alabama. I hope the CAB is ready for an uprising if it happens.

Does it really matter? Even if the state or the people still own them they have no access to them. That's like saying you own land but have no way to get to it. Who owns the deer inside a high fence?? Makes a HUGE difference. Example: High Fence Birmingham has a huge 3 yo buck. High Fence Montgomery offers to buy the deer. Can Birmingham sell a deer it doesn't own? If Montgomery moves it to their fence, would that not be stolen property?

Chuck says the deer belong to everyone, yet when a high fence is installed they instantly become the property of the landowners. Can't have it both ways.

2Dogs, buck zones would be fine by me, but I doubt they'd make them equitable for all parts of the state.
I having a CAB member that's a high fence operator is a bad decision too. I was pretty vocal about it when it happened. His brother being elected to the state HOR basically paved the way for them getting to do whatever they wanted.

It's still happening. The freaking part of the state has little to do with the rut. It is simply the origin of the deer. Marengo county deer have a late rut. A helluva lot of the state was stocked with these deer, during the restocking in, mostly the 40's and 50's. They didn't look around and delay the rut because of what county they are in now. The DCNR committed restocking malpractice! They should have restocked the State with deer from northwest Illinois, northern Missouri and southern Iowa!! Dang idiots.

I am not so sure the high fence guys at least the ones I know care for Chuck, I thinks it's actually the opposite or least for the ones I have talked to who raise shooter bucks. They seem to have a low opinion of the current process and that their operations are governed by GW instead of treated like live stock. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe every wild deer must be removed from an enclosure once it's complete and the GW's actually have to inspect and permit the pen prior to being allowed to bring deer in. As far as CWD originating with deer farmers it is illegal to transport deer across state lines. All pen deer In the state of Alabama at this point should have been born here. I am sure some people brought deer in from other states but I think the risk now days would not be worth it when you could just AI and accomplish the same thing legally. With that being the case the only way to introduce CWD wouldn be through some natural transmission. I think CWD is the result of a prion similar to mad cow? I may be wrong about that but if so it unclear where it originates with some therioies being they come from meteors. As for deer farmers and who owns the deer I have heard some of the farmers say that if CWD ever showed up on their farm that every deer would be slaughtered and burned by DCNR. They are strictly regulated by the DCNR so even though the farmer owns the deer the DCNR still have a lot of say. Also deer farming to these guys or at least the ones I know are pretty competitive so the idea that they are a big click with Chuck may not be accurate.

According to the latest email sent out by them, it is clear that the rules they came up with are designed for giving tickets and generating revenue but not for healthy wildlife and resource management.

Let's see, now. It's illegal to bring deer in from other states. Therefore, it can't happen. We don't need these operations, in my opinion. (Any more than needing the CAB; and I'm not sure which is the most dangerous)

ya'll don't really want county deputies and municipal police enforcing game and fish laws. Seen it first hand over the years and it don't work. Most, with a few exceptions, of those officers won't get IN the woods. You really do want full time GWs enforcing those laws. You will want a real GW to answer yer call about poachers on your place.
an exception in the above statement, in my experience, would be Shelby Co Sheriffs office. When I had Jefferson and Shelby by myself for a year they were a great help to me in answering calls.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....
