My wife's first deer started as a decent 6 point and ended up being this 11 point. And it was only 50 yards. I guess I was just so excited we had her a buck to shoot that it didn't matter anyway.

I've never had anyone tell me they shot a small one. FWIW.

she killed that evening and it was plenty cold enough that she wanted to wait and skin it the next morning after she could show it to her dad and grandparents. So I gutted it and obliged of course. II assume it was from sitting over night maybe as far as those knots. But it came from Clarke county

not saying I'm an expert, but after years of using cameras and killing quite a few bucks we've had pics of I can usually score a buck with in 5 inches, assuming I have several pictures of the buck. Where it can be misleading is when you have only one pic. Depending on how the buck is standing, day time/ night time, etc. it can add 10" or in some cases take away 10". Had a 160 years back that I had hundreds of pics of. Most made him look around 160, a few 170 and a few 140...all depended on how far away from the camera he was, amount of daylight and the position he was holding his head when the pic was taken.

My father in law will tell me that. He'll shoot a spike or a 5 pt. He's got some good ones on the wall and doesn't care any more. "I killed a little 3 point" gun

Geno, I think you got lucky on the "buck" hoof prints. I'm not a betting man, but if I was I'd be $100 you couldn't tell a spike track from a doe track.

I've done em both ways. Killed them and thought they were bigger, found them and them be bigger than I thought.

The saying that drives me crazy is, I saw a BIG doe this morning. I saw 4 BIG does this afternoon. I don't know why people feel the need to emphasize the word BIG or even use it. It's either an adult doe, a fawn or a yearling. The way most people use that term, you'd think they saw a 200 pound doe.

How cool is it that her fingernail polish matches the deer's eyes. Pretty young lady, but man that is an ugly old buck.

Great buck for your wife, congrats
I'm glad she got him at 50 yards-that kamikaze looking joker might've overrun their position before they got another round chambered and fired

I did this. Friend found the sign. Rubs and scrapes. First of bow season. He set me up over a scrape the size of a pickup hood. I was amped up about the sign. And mind you I don't see that great. Deer came in, hit the licking branch over the scrape. I saw white and I dropped the string.
Didn't have good blood. We went back next day and fracked it up. I felt pretty sheepish walking up on that deer. They were managing this place. Not shooting does for awhile to build up numbers.
I was prepared for an azz chewing.
Big old grin broke out on my friends face and he said "I guess the squirrels ate the horns." He had some good fun with me for awhile after that.
I blame poor light and adrenaline....

Any time you would like I'll take that bet. I'll sit blindfolded, you film the deer, we'll walk along once they are gone and look at the tracks. I can teach you to do it as well if you like.

bulldoodoo, you can't tell a male deer from a female deer from the tracks.

I would feel bad taking furflyin's money.

I would not feel bad taking yours. Exactly how much would you like to lose while I school ya?

I've killed plenty that "shrunk" and have recovered plenty that have "shrunk", but I do kinda laugh to myself when someone has shot a "monster" and they are telling the story before the tracking begins - then when you find the deer you see the confused look on their face.
