Exit wound was no larger than a nickle and I was very confused. I called Barnes and asked if this was typical, and they said yes. Both deer bled significantly inside the body cavity, but without a large exit wound, they could be difficult to track.

Those bullets did exactly what they were supposed to do I'm not seeing the issue with this.

I didn't think about weighing it. I'll try to do that

well I just weighed it on a digital postal scale. 6 grams.

1 gram = 15.5 grains 6x15.5 = 93 grains

I cut out the bullet myself but I didn`t think to check for fragments any where near the entry. looks like im missing 47 grains somewhere. you gonna make me walk my lazy arse all the way back to that spot 1 more time now. none of it really matters because the deer is dead now but its bugging me.

Dang I'm dying to know what happened too! I doubt you'll find any bullet fragments, but a broken limb or sapling would help connect some dots!

That's what I meant. As for other fragments, I was saying in the deer

It would have to be a heck of a limb for you to hit in order to lose that much velocity IMO you would have seen the tree explode if it were a limb/tree hit. And a heck of a limb/tree at that to lose 47gr of bullet weight.

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

I had a problem with a box of 308 fusions last year. Like they were under powered.

Yes I have seen something like it. The first deer my son killed was a doe standing broadside in a green field at 150 yards. The deer dropped in her tracks. She kept flopping around so I shot her when we walked up to her. He shot it with a 243 and a Hornady Interlock and the bullet hit the shoulder, turned straight up and exited above the shoulder beside her spine on the side of the bullet impact. Bullet didn't break the shoulder and never penetrated the body cavity. Apparently there was enough shock to her spine to put her down but she probably would have eventually got up and run off if I hadn't shot her again.

Sounds like it was too much angle. Just stayed under the skin.

maybe not. Buddy of mine shot a good buck at 80 yards in the woods, hit a 3" diameter tree bout 50 yard s out. Killed the deer, it ran 250 yards. Didn't see the tree until we were on the other side of the tree. I think he was shooting a 7 mag or a 300 mag.

I've had great success with Fusion as well, but I'm shooting a 308, maybe that's the problem. grin

Even with 90grs of lead left it should have had enough velocity at that short range to penetrate I would think but heck if I know. Even if it did hit a limb, it would still have plenty of speed left to penetrate the deer at 1000 fps. And that's giving the thought of the bullet slowing way down

To mushroom like that it hit something with speed. To be in the deers hide and have not penetrated, it wasn't the deer. See any feathers? Ha!

After reading the above statement I seem to remember you losing a bet to me a few years ago on the farm. Something about you shooting more yotes than me hogs on the farm. I seem to recall I blanked you young man.(3-0) Hell you even let a baby yote live so your wife wouldn't get mad......that same year. beers

i'm thinking the angle was sharper than is appeared, letting it skitter along the ribs. still, it expanded, and stopped after only 3.5 inches. i'd send it to federal and ask 'em what happened. send the lot number from your box of ammo; even better, send the box and remaining rounds so they can be broken down and the powder weighed, etc. this could have happened with other rounds from that lot number. weird, truly weird ...

You know I haven't been able to hunt this year. Sustaining work is a whole lot more important. Hopefully next season will be better. I do owe you a hunting trip though. If I join a good club you'll have to bring your son up too.

my dad shot a doe bout 10 years ago runnin across a field an he hit her full stride an I mean she was skint back. he missed her the first shot but folded her up the second an it looked similar to what you have best we could figure was that when she flipped forward she must have flipped around the bullet so it came out the same side it went in bout three inches apart or it richoched or something. it was crazy. it was a brownin bar 30-06

I haven't seen this asked yet, but I assume y'all know that's not your buddy's bullet, right? He had an entrance and exit?
