1 st post in so long that I have forgotten my screen name, but have followed the site since college days in 2000 or so. This season has has been a weird one for me. I have had incredible luck and fortune at times, but have struggled getting my son on one. We have seen rain, warm temps, and freezing temps. I killed a mature buck running a doe last weekend and even felt guilty instantly because he wasn't there to take the shot. Some days we have hunted seen perfect, but no sightings. My son is 13 and has killed his share sitting with me, but I could tell the frustration was getting to him. After Work )one day I took a walk in a small tract that we live on. I saw a lot of tracks and several scrapes. I asked Zane if he would like to give it a shot and he said yes and could he try it alone as he thought he could concentrate more and wanted to spot the deer himself. I agreed and as I opened the safe for some reason my grandfathers( died in accident way before my birth) model 12 Winchester caught my eye. I asked Zane if he would like carry it with a couple rounds of buckshot as a far shot there is about 60 yards. He thought it was the coolest thing with its 30 inch barrel, although he asked" its old, do you think it will shoot?". I just answered, no doubt. This gun is the one that father always carried when we hunted squirrels and rabbits, though I am positive it has never killed a deer. His father purchased it for $35 in a pawn shop in south Florida when my dad was a kid. I walked with Zane down to a small plot and helped him into a short ladder stand and gave him a good luck as I walked back to th house. I had a few things to do in the house, but at around 5:15 I though I heard a muffled shot. Zane text me and said he had shot one and it was down. I don't think my feet hit the ground on the way to him. He said something just told him to look behind him in the stand( first time) and a doe was slipping by. He fired at about 50 yards and the deer folded. He said he was so excited that he yelled"yea" in the stand. I know this was a long read, but thought it too good not to share. May we all this season find something that we celebrate with enthusiasm from the stand. The only problem is I know that his days of sitting with me and us cutting up in the stand are winding down.

Man that's cool. My son gave up on hunting. He is 16 now and has other interests. My girls are still a bit young but I hope they'll want to come one day.
I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Terrific! You know that's Zane's gun now, right?
“Killing tomorrow’s trophies today.”
On the distance I like to walk to my stands: “The first 100 yards is also the last 100 yards.”
