Kentucky, up a holler
Seems like the squirrels are timbering out way ahead of the dogs. Anyone else experiencing this? Been my theory lately. I've seen it happen both here and in KY. Hunted Skyline WMA last weekend and definitely think that was the case. Treed too many to not see the squirrels and my dogs do a decent job of timbering. Anyway, just wanted to see what you guys are up against. Managed to knock out a few today.

Last I went they were staying tight to the trees. Just about couldn't get them to show themselves.

We had one squirrel timber to the tree next to us, and we still couldn't find him. These were large oaks with plenty of branches though.

Some days are like that.

God Bless,
David B.

When a dog trees a sqyirrel and it runs through the tops for a ways they call that timbering. It's hard for a dog to follow one unless it experienced and has good eyes.

We run into it a lot on the forest but rarely on private land. We had a couple timber on us this weekend. But crunch is constantly watching for them to timber and I can tell by the excitement in their bark if they timber. It sucks to have to run like hell to a tree trying to catch them before they get to a den tree.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

That's my favorite part , nothing like a well placed shot with a .22 when one pauses on the end of a limb just before that jump .

These squirrels me and Beadlescomb hunt don't pause most of the time. We had a guy off here go with us one morning and out of the 10 or so we treed he got shots at maybe two. Some days they will sit for a 22 but it's rare.
