The lofts downtown start around $1300 for a 1br, and are anywhere from $1600-$3k for a 2+br. That sounds a lot more realistic. $1500'ish a month by the time you factor in utilities etc is still a good bit. I guess I've just been spoiled paying $425 with utilities for my tiny old apartment. That isn't going to happen any where around Birmingham. Not even the ghetto. Ya I will miss my little apartment here but onto newer prospects hopefully in the Birmingham area soon.

I don't mean any disrespect, but Jefferson County could be one of the more if no not the most dysfunctional counties as a whole in the state. Mcalla is a great place and the exception. I believe most of the schools are run by municipalities, Gardendale, Trussville, and others. I could be wrong but I believe this to be true. Taxes are ridiculous as well according to my in-laws that live in Leeds. There are exceptions like Mcalla, Trussville and Gardendale. Id live somewhere like mcalla or vance and just commute. Phuck jefferson county McCalla is Jefferson County. I love how people who have never lived in Jefferson County run it down so much. I would love for one person to give me a real reason no to live in Jefferson County. The absolutely best schools anywhere around Birmingahm and really in the State are in Jefferson County. No offense, but, Mcalla and Gardendale are Jefferson County School system. No way I would choose that over Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia or Trussville schools. Just look at the rankings of schools. Jefferson County politics sucks, but it has almost zero affect on me. I promise you Jefferson County taxes are easily offset by what I would save in time and gas to drive in from 30 freaking miles out of town. Same. I personally wouldn’t live in Birmingham or any of the surrounding areas unless a very well paying job came my way that I just couldn’t turn down. I grew up in Arab and for my money, you can’t beat it. The school system isn’t ranked in the top 5 anymore, but is still a good one. Plus, I’m not a fan of that much traffic. I lived in Trussville a few years during my early career in the investment world. It was a really nice town, the traffic was just awful. Anyway, I’m not trying to knock Birmingham because it is just a matter of personal preference. When my fiancé was in grad school at UAB she lived in Vestavia and loved it. That said, if I had to live there and could afford it I would live in Homewood or Mountain Brook.
I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. Theres a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: as government expands, liberty contracts. Ronald Reagan

I live in Trussville and It's perfect for my family. I can be downtown in 25min, but still feel like I live in a small town where everybody knows everybody (it is growing though.) I would be hard pressed to find a better place to raise a family. I think it would suck as a single young guy though. I've got my girlfriend so I'm not shopping the market. I want access to fun but not needing it nightly sorta thing. What would a starter home in Trussville go for? $150-175K'ish?

If you move to bham and live by yourself, that ain't possible lol. I pay $500/mo with everything included and have a roommate that pays the same for a 2bd/1ba in Forest Park. If you have any questions, I've shopped just about every apartment in Bham in the last two years, feel free to shoot me a PM. Ya my current rent is $365 a month for my 1br "efficiency unit" and I'm a 1/2 mile from the stadium. Power runs $30-60. Pay my neighbor $20 for the wifi password $500 for everything isn't bad. I have no clue if Forest Park is good or bad but ya $500 isn't bad at all. Forest Park isn't bad at all. It is an old neighborhood. Some apartments in the area are old and run down. But, it is a good area for a single person. Close to lakeview and a lot of places to eat, drink and be merry.

School system is one of the best in the state so people are paying for it. There are some garden homes in Carrington Lakes for less than $200k which is a really nice neighborhood, but it's Way out.

Gotcha, similar with Auburn. People are paying more for the schools. Not having kids right now schools aren't really a concern but generally nice areas have nice schools. Thanks for the info.

Bham is the asshole of the South. Folks have thrown money at it since before I was born an it just keeps shitting on itself. "Not Bham" is the place to be. It's hilarious when people talk about things they don't know about.

Here you go 7-08, this is all you need. But if it were me and I was starting fresh I would figure out where you want to live and then get a job versus getting a job that dictates where you live. I know financially that can be tough but it is worth it to live where you want. http://judgmentalmaps.com/image/82389714893 Different strokes for different folks. As a youngin I was told the exact opposite and followed the advice. I think about that conversation often, which ended with this memorable phrase, "There is no bad place to live in this country, but there are a lot of bad jobs." Very glad I followed this. Its afforded me opportunities to live in many great places and see tremendous career growth.

If it were me and I was moving into Birmingham with no kids yet, I would live in Crestwood on the edge of Crestline. It's like a poor man's Mt. Brook. You are right near everything without the Mt. Brook cost of real estate and taxes. When kids come along, you can then move over into the Brook, or move to the suburbs. ^^^^ this. Crestline is quiet with alot of young decent people. Cahaba heights is affordable too with a small town feel to it
