That's not the point. The White House runs 24/7/365 as if the POTUS is there all time. It costs around $1.4 billion each year to run. Melania is staying in Trump tower. If she stayed in Trump tower for a hypothetical 8 years, that would costs an additional $1 trillion. You can count on any of his trips costing $3 million regardless of the fact that he owns these properties. This may be a far out in left field viewpoint, but I believe the POTUS (any POTUS) should run their lives as examples to the nation with some degree of frugality until this behemoth federal government reaches some degree of solvency. I don't know why this is such a crazy concept.

Understand that I realize she isn't planning on staying there the entire time. That is just to illustrate how these costs add up

You are missing the entire point of this thread. Nobody said vacations are bad. Trump spent more in one month than other presidents have spent in their entire year in office. Obama only spent 97 million in travel costs in 8 years of office and Trump is on pace to crush that in his first year. That makes him look bad.

There's nothing to believe or disprove. The length of the flight doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that he went to his own place. The White House still runs as if he is there all day every day and the trips still cost a lot of money. None of that makes these trips free or even remotely cheap. Taxpayer money is used for presidential trips, which involves protection by the Secret Service, other federal agencies, and local/state law enforcement.

so does the secret service make more money when he is vacationing, maybe they have to temporarily hire more secret service while on vacation

They don't necessarily hire more, they just utilize more assets. Not to mention the Coast Guard.
