Old timers used there fly rods as jig poles but i dont know of anyone that set out to do it. I caught a few on the lake by the house on a little clouser minnow looking fly but i wasnt targeting them
We will burn that bridge when we get there

I've caught em on the fly. Use a small eye weighted clouser minnow fly, and a sink tip or sinking line. Try different color flies.

I fished Lake Harding one April day when you could have loaded up with a fly rod. The fish were literally against the bank in 6" of water. We wasted hours trying to find them in submerged tree tops in 3-4 foot of water. I expected them to be shallow. I had no idea they'd be that shallow.

I have caught a bunch of them on a fly I used to make. The fly was a short white feather tail on a long shank hook wrapped in epoxy and glitter. Looked just like a tuffie

I've tried it a little on Martin. No luck with the crappies, just worlds of small spots. Used a small streamer that looked pretty good. After trying a place with a fly, I could usually catch a crappie on a 1/32 jig/tube. I'll get some small Clousers. Crappies were in the 15 foot range on Martin, Monday, suspended. Water temp averaged 58 to 59. Not long before they move in.

I haven't done it but I want to. I am sure you've seen the crappie candy fly but it's so similar to a clouser I would think you could get away with a small one.

I've done it on Smith once. I caught a few, but it takes a long time to get a fly 20-30 feet deep. Did catch one of my top five biggest ever though.

I've caught some before on the fly, but I think it was more sporadic and the result of blind casting. At one point in the year are crappie typically shallow? I guess that is really the best time to target them on the fly.

change yer tackle so you can fish deeper water easily. It ain't dry fly fishing but it is fly fishing.
I've used a short fast sinking shooting head, short leader to get deeper faster to catch deeper fish of several types, inc stripes.

I saw guys crappie fishing on West point with fly rods. They were slaying them too. They were using tiny jigs suspended below corks. they cast them around wood. Logs and stumps. They adjusted the length of the line below the cork till they got it to the preferred depth.

I've done it before when we had a lake house on lay. I was mainly fishing for anything that would bite but caught crappie. Used real light marabou jigs because it didn't take much and I would catch tons of bream and bass along with the crappie. Hard to pick up a fly rod for them now when you can troll or shoot docks.

My curse is that I can longer pick up a spinning or baitcasting rod. I went all in on the fly. Been wanting a mess of crappie as of late, and they're not as reliable as bluegill or bass. I can get those on the fly pretty easily any time. Crappie, for some reason, make it a little more difficult on me.

one can catch ANY fish on a fly rod, sometimes it takes thinking outside the box. example, I wanted to catch a world record blue catfish on 2# test tippet. Problem wasn't hooking one big enough it was landing it. When the 10#+ catfish would run line OUT, then run sideways, the drag on the full fly line would break the tippet with the drag on freespool. ![shocked shocked](/forum/images/graemlins/default/shocked.gif) fixed it by applying techniques used by big game salt water fly fishermen. I used a short 15 foot shooting head, backed by light mono, then light braid for backing. Cut WAY down on the line drag and resulted in several world record fish.

I've caught them using white streamers. I've also caught a pile of bass on them, too.
