Congrats! I got skunked this morning. First time ever turkey hunting, felt like I went to school in my underwear You must have a pocket full of rabbits feet unless I'm misunderstanding your post! 1st time you've never killed on a hunt or firs time never hearing a gobble? I get skunked 80% of the time and probably don't hear a bird on 25% of my hunts. First time turkey hunting ever. I did here a gobble @ 7 and heard him fly down, sounded like maybe 100-150 yards away so I set and tried calling but I guess he went the other way. then on the way out around 10 on the other side of the river one gobbled twice so I drive over there and no luck. Was it likely the same bird? I'm still new I wasn't sure how they were about flying over water. I've only seen them fly when spooked or roosting.

Turkey will go wherever he wants. Could be same bird could not. Keep up after them. Remember call sparringly and be patient.

Most birds don't gobble. For everyone that's gobbling out there alot more are staying silent. This can be from competition where they don't want to get their butt kicked from a dominant bird or more likely a band of disgruntle Jake's. Many many more reasons but to answer your question no a Gobbler will not always gobble on roost or on the ground.

Where a Gobbler roosts depends really on the bird and how much pressure is put on him or where his hens are roosting. Some birds are very predictable where they roost others roost just where they are at the point it's getting dark. Terrain also has alot to do with it.

I hardly ever use decoys but when I do it's in fields. I've only tried them twice in woods and both times the birds spooked. One I had pitching in off his roost flew 100yds down a creek to me but as soon as he rounded a tree he saw my decoys and flared like a duck and landed 70 yds across the creek on the opposite ridge. All I could do was watch him walk over the hill.
