When and how do your roots turkeys? I know there's more than one way to skin a cat and I'm just interested in what the rest of you guys do.

Been a long time since I've done it, but mainly just get up as high as possible and listen for wings or gobbling. If I'm only roosting him, I try not to get too close unless I just feel like sitting there til after dark when he roosts in sight of me. You can owl or hit a crow call, but normally I let them do it on their own.

If I strike a gobbler in the morning and I can't do anything with him, I will go back to his general roost area and set up around 3 in the afternoon. After the woods settle down, I will do a few clucks and purrs that sound like a hen feeding.Keep your eyes open and listen for that loud where are you gobbler cluck. Until hens start setting they will most times come back and roost somewhere close to the gobbler. You want to be somewhere between them the next morning. I wait till black dark to walk out if I have turkeys close by. You can make a little noise walking out, but don't use a light. If I didn't hear a gobble at fly up, I will hoot at him when I get a distance away just to see about where he might be.They don't always answer, but I will be back in the morning anyway.

Grandma said...Always keep a gun close at hand, you just never know when you might run across some varmint that needs killing...
