There's a lot of reasons why the governor did that Ben. First of all it made the decision to close county and city school systems by superintendents easier due to life safety concerns verified by the governor and the state superintendent. And they don't have to make up the date. It already sets in motion the personal ( ALEA, ADHS, local EMT's and the National Guard ) to mobilize too an area that may have been affected by a storm. Plus the financial aid the state would get from the federal government.

Well, I am glad the weather wasn't as bad as predicted. Also glad I was prepared and had a plan for my family had it been as bad as expected.

Like those already posted, have a tragedy happen to you or someone close to you and bad weather takes on a new meaning. I lost my house to Katrina, luckily we evacuated before it hit(because of forecasting).

One thing from this storm, dadgum wind is ripping right now!!

The wind just got to the gump. It's whipping here now too. I'm looking forward to these next few days of cool weather. It will probably be the last we get

I'm wondering how many trees I may see down on the ride to work because of saturated soil and now this crazy wind

There are several parents down in Enterprise whose kids might be alive today if school had been cancelled on a day like this several years ago. If you want to assign a reason for schools being overly cautious, the death of those kids in Enterprise would be it.

Yall the weathermen weren't wrong today. Every single one of those storms that got warned and watched on had the potential to produce tornadoes. Just because a tornado didn't rip through your particular city doesnt mean they missed the prediction. Unlike hurricanes it's impossible to predict ahead of time where a tornado will form all they can do is warn on storms that are capable of producing tornadoes and let us know when the conditions are favorable for naders.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the weather men at all. They predicted severe storms with tornado possibilities. They were right. Just glad the tornado parts didn't materialize.

And yep, quite a bit easier to predict where a hurricane will make landfall. Those are big, slow moving organized storms. I don't understand how they can predict severe thunderstorms like they do now. Must be that whodoo that Geno is talking bout

I'd say they were pretty wrong 24 hours out. I tried to go back and look the old maps maps but they are no longer available. I'd make the original predictions unavailable too if I missed it by a mile. I still stand by my assessment that weatherman ain't worth a shart

In 2011 I was out of town. The shitheads who were "watching the forecasts" delayed school in the morning, then announced it was on -- so students went. Then at 11 a.m. or so when the shat hit the fan they said they were letting out early but no students could leave because of the weather. They were retained in the school. My wife went to the school to get our daughter and was stuck there with her. Their cell phones would not work at the time because of the overload and weather problems. Our son was home by himself because he was sick, and went to a neighbor's house.

Doesn't bother me one iota if they cancel classes 24 or 48 or 72 hours early out of prudent thinking. I'd rather see a delay or cancellation and nothing happen than a storm hit a school full of kids.

It's a no-win for school boards and the weather folks: If they don't do enough they get bitched at for not telling anyone. If they try to be prudent and nothing happens they get bitched at for creating hysteria.

Probably best for a lot of folks to just watch the skies themselves like in the 1800s and then get shitcanned by lightning, tornadoes, hail or wind.

Minus any cells producing (possible) forecasted tornadoes, the forecast was pretty spot on.

It was forecasted all along that there would be a morning round of storms along the warm front as it lifted north, a period of calm and sun during the middle of the day, and then storms firing along and ahead of the dry line with the best chance of strong storms being east of interstate 65.

Minus a tornado, that's pretty much what we got.

Ignorant on a number of levels. Severe weather includes more than just tornadoes. Let me know if you need help with the English language; such as "possible," "no need to panic" and so on.

Furthermore...

Predicted 7pm radar (24+ hours in advance)

Actual radar at 7:50pm

Nice work on your research there and that radar is actually pretty impressive. When you put out 30 different "models" one is bound to be pretty close. I'll be sure to send you some kneepads so that your work with Mr. Spann is more comfortable.

Careful Crenshaw, you're bordering on common sense and unauthorized thinking.
One of the over educated geeks gonna run up in here and accuse you of "not understanding the proper terminology".
