I find myself in a situation new to me (although, I'm sure I'm not the only one this year). Because of the dry weather I haven't planted. I have disked multiple times to bare dirt and have been waiting for the promise of rain. The soil in my 4.5 acres of food plots is dry as a bone. My property is in south Alabama in the Enterprise/Elba area. I have a few questions:

1. Will wheat/oats/radishes germinate if I get a rain within a couple of weeks?

2. Is there anything that will grow better than standard wheat/oats when planted this late?

3. If I plant this weekend, how long should my seed last since it is not too hot?

4. Normally I put out half my nitrogen at planting. Should I put out more at planting this year to "jump start" the food plot?

Thanks!

BTW: This weekend may be my last opportunity to plant until Thanksgiving. I'm going to north Missouri to hunt with a buddy that owns 400 acres there smile
It is dry as a bone there too frown

Good Hunting,

PT

1) yes
2) no
3) the seed can lay dormant for months. Cover it deep enough so heavy morning dews won't make it germinate. I'd recommend at least an inch deep. If it germinates, then dries out, you're screwed.
4) don't put out too much or it will burn up your seedlings if it germinates then goes dry again.
5) cutting dry land, just makes it drier. If the ground is bare, spread the seed then cut it under.

All good advise. I am going to have to replant too, we've had no rain in 6 weeks. If you can rent a grain drill and seed that way you have the best odds. With the way you have it disked it should work great. Then you don't have to worry. We broadcasted and covered and the birds have eaten 75% of our seed I'd guess.

Planted the first weekend in October near Danley's crossroads. It rained the following week and hasn't rained since. Plots are up and look decent...with the next ran I have no doubt they will take off.

You can plant with weeds in the plot and then disk them under as you turn under your seed. I would cut back on disking so often to reduce soil compaction.

i'm in elmore county i have planted the day after gun season opened .

right now what i have planted looks bad . i have a lot of traffic on my plots and the deer are walking them down as much as eating them . i still have some i have not planted . when i do plant it'll be 50/50 wheat/oats . if after gun season it'll be only wheat .

i wouldn't worry about weeds right now, frost should kill them before they seed up .

The continuing drought has made food plotting
a hard task this year in the southern half
of the State.

The main thing to worry about now with re-seeding
is the a.m. temps. If the a.m. temps stay in the
30s germination will be very difficult.

Pray for a big rain end of next week and some a.m. temps
in 40s preferably even warmer if you have to replant(sad to be hoping for warm during deer season).

Hey Coffee, me and you must be neighbors. I hunt just a mile north of Danley crossroads.
