I find myself in a situation new to me (although, I'm sure I'm not the only one this year). Because of the dry weather I haven't planted. I have disked multiple times to bare dirt and have been waiting for the promise of rain. The soil in my 4.5 acres of food plots is dry as a bone. My property is in south Alabama in the Enterprise/Elba area. I have a few questions: 1. Will wheat/oats/radishes germinate if I get a rain within a couple of weeks? 2. Is there anything that will grow better than standard wheat/oats when planted this late? 3. If I plant this weekend, how long should my seed last since it is not too hot? 4. Normally I put out half my nitrogen at planting. Should I put out more at planting this year to "jump start" the food plot? Thanks! BTW: This weekend may be my last opportunity to plant until Thanksgiving. I'm going to north Missouri to hunt with a buddy that owns 400 acres there It is dry as a bone there too
Good Hunting,
PT

1) yes 2) no 3) the seed can lay dormant for months. Cover it deep enough so heavy morning dews won't make it germinate. I'd recommend at least an inch deep. If it germinates, then dries out, you're screwed. 4) don't put out too much or it will burn up your seedlings if it germinates then goes dry again. 5) cutting dry land, just makes it drier. If the ground is bare, spread the seed then cut it under.

If you can rent a grain drill and seed that way you have the best odds. With the way you have it disked it should work great. Then you don't have to worry. We broadcasted and covered and the birds have eaten 75% of our seed I'd guess.

The continuing drought has made food plotting a hard task this year in the southern half of the State.
The main thing to worry about now with re-seeding is the a.m. temps. If the a.m. temps stay in the 30s germination will be very difficult.
Pray for a big rain end of next week and some a.m. temps in 40s preferably even warmer if you have to replant(sad to be hoping for warm during deer season).
