Matt, me and you almost always on the same page, this post is same sentence, word for word! You nailed it! I hunt more than 10 days a year, but I stay outa big buck core areas, jumping around shooting does till the "time is right." Mackdaddy, I've taken 4 140"+ bucks on the same lease in the last several years. I've passed on several young 120-130" bucks in that time frame too. I've also killed several 120-130" bucks that were mature (4-5 years old).
I don't have any secrets. Just hunt smart, and put your time in. Limit pressure. If the conditions are not right for hunting a particular area then go fishing, or shopping with the wife. Don't waste time hunting 24/7 when conditions are not favorable. When I figured that out I started killing a lot of bucks. I could probably hunt less than 10 days a year and have just as much success as hunting 40 days a year if I picked those days accordingly.
"Why do you ask"?

I do know that I wouldn't pay money, even for a guaranteed hunt, anywhere for a 140" deer.
Me either. I wouldn't pay anything outside of the cost of a lease for a 200" deer. There are several clubs in different parts of this state where it is possible to kill 130"+ deer every year.

Most people in this part of the world wouldn't know a 140 if it horned their leg, just sayin...
Everybody in this post talkin about all the 140 deer they have shot, and low and behold someone posts a pic of their 140 that might score 125 with some novice scorer... I've got 3 bucks you could set that buck almost inside, all have been officials scored, none made pope and young...
My point stands, if there are so many bucks over measly 140 in Alabama, why is the state only registering a very, very, very few pope and youngs which the requirement is only net 125?

Just cause you kill it don't mean you have to put in the book or even talk about it.

I never have and never will pay to go on an outfitted or guided hunt just because I like to do things on my own, even though my success isn't nearly as high as it would be on paid hunts I'm sure. I do pay the money that it costs to be legal to hunt on Midwest public lands and see 140's there with decent regularity though.

Interesting comments, post some pictures of those deer that seem to dwarf the one posted. I would like to see what you have that doesn't meet P & Y minimum 125. Here is one that grosses 121 7/8", nets 117 7/8". And no I would not pay to go on a guided hunt for the purpose of shooting a whitetail. I am however, open to a DIY hunt for free range whitetails anywhere.

"I've got a 6" member." "Well, I've got a 7" member." "Well, I'VE got 3 members and all are over 8". Just because you have no idea how to gather 3 over 8" members unto yourself, doesn't mean nobody else does." And so on and so forth......that's what these kinds of posts turn into every single time on here. A bunch of folks just DYING to brag and to throw the credentials of their kills out there for the world to see.

The problem in Alabama is every partial of land basically is being hunted by somebody and the key to it is to be able to have alot of land that you can manage and maintain for years . I had to really educate myself quick on knowing what I was looking at and thru educating myself looking at deer's body and guessing there age I feel I have improved myself when i see a deer , I keep a digital camera with me at all times in the woods and I will take pics almost every hunt of what I see if I can I go back and study those pics to see if I made the right choice and 9 times out of 10 I made the right choice to let him walk , had guys say why didn't you kill him well hunting is about decisions and I try to make the right ones so maybe a fellow hunter will get a better deer the next year and i can truthfully say alot of hunters in our Club have benefited and got a good deer the next year , now fellow hunters have seen what I have been doing and now alot of them carry their cameras as well , we have been very fortunate and killed several deer over 140,150, and occasionally deer alot bigger , but Alabama has great potential if we educate ourselfs about deer age but we have to also realize every deer is not going to score 140 . I love to hunt but wouldn't feel right harvesting a deer either if somebody said there's a 150 that comes in at 1pm everday at that oak tree and I killed it , to me there's no satisfaction in that kill I didn't earn it and sure don't want to pay to kill it but everybody is different I'm just glad God provides these animals and blesses us with this great sport of Hunting.

"A bunch of folks just DYING to brag and to throw the credentials of their kills out there for the world to see. Juggy also said "Hey guys...just got back from Illinois. Killed him on Halloween morning at about 10:00 at 12 yards. My first P&Y buck...my first 10 point too after all these years of hunting!" If you can't post and brag here, where should you? I don't think www.ischattcrimson-n-white.com or www.iwhizorange-n-blue.com are the best places. Congratulations on the 10 point by the way!

Come on man. I posted ONE TIME, to my teammates ONLY, to let them know how my trip went. That buck wasn't posted on a general or serious forum and won't ever be mentioned here again...not by me anyway. I brag on my son alot because I'm proud of him, but I don't do a whole bunch of bragging about my kills. Heck, I ain't got much to brag about....maybe that's why. It's that whole "I'm a better hunter than you because I've got 5011 140's on the wall" attitude that I can't stand. I would rather be around a room full of loud mouth Democrat women than to listen to an arrogant deer hunter. Just one of my pet peeves I guess.

The trophy is in the eye of the beholder, if you want to pay someone to take you to kill a 140" deer go ahead. But its not for me. I have deer on the wall that a lot of people would have just hung the horns in the shed, but since I was hunting with my dad and grand dad they are trophies to me. If you are hunting just to say you killed a huge deer, it would probably be cheeper to just go on an outfitted hunt, instead of paying for a lease.

The world needs more people holding deer in pictures, and less people holding cameras in front of mirrors.

Apparently anything I post is taken as arrogance Jughead. I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't mean it that way. I just don't appreciate being called a liar, and I don't understand why my post was taken that way by you. I was responding to mackdaddy's post, which the last time I checked, wasn't a show of arrogance. Carry on....without me. You, and others like you, are precisely why I stopped saying anything on here about the deer I killed. Now I will once again crawl into the cave and keep them to myself.
